As we started up 120 from 395, we called my wife to let her know we had gotten that far on our drive from L.A. and were OK. She said we had gotten an email from recreation.gov about our reservation when we lost our cell signal. I sweated going up and checking in for our first night. Luckily, they told us that it was not an issue. There was a lottery for the spots in the 'A' loop, which seemedby snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks all for the input. We did the 395 to Big Pine, 168 / 266 / 95 route. It was a fascinating (and some not so) drive through areas where most people wouldn't necessarily go. I loved the free range area near Oasis, where a cow was standing in the middle of the eastbound road, not even thinking about moving. I can't imagine doing that drive at night.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thank you. The Big Pine route was the one that I preferred. Nice to hear about it from someone.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotemkbgdns when you see a "w" and the number "5", that means that 5 previously reserved sites are now available, probably due to cancellation. Thanks for the explanation. That is what I was guessing regarding the designation of campsites changing from Unavailable to Walk-up over the last couple of weeks. Thanks. I will keep checking back on that website for cancellations in August.QuoteI believe the August dates were made available at the regular time (6 months in advance) because they had the campground scheduled to open 01 August. The July dates were just released because the campground is opening earlier than anticipated.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I want to go in August. Why do they wait to release the post July 31 reservations?by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Maybe this reply is too late for you. We just got back from TM. Mono Pass was a great dayhike that my both my son and I enjoyed. We brought lunch and our backpacking chairs and sat down next to Upper Sardine Lake. The hike has beautiful scenery and meadows, river/ creek views, and of course the Mono Lake view, which is just past the Pass. We did the Gaylor Lakes a few years ago. Also a nice hby snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
My son and I just got back from TM last night after a two night stay. We did Elizabeth Lake on Sunday. Every time that I had been there before, mosquitoes chewed me up. This time, only a couple of bites(I wore shorts). For Monday's hike, we chose Mono Pass over Lower Cathedral lake. After hearing about the mosquitoes, I'm glad we chose that way. It was my first time doing Mono Pass. That was rby snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

If Yosemite, and most other National Parks, had free attendance, they would be loved to death. Especially the Parks that are close to major metrop[olitan areas.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Not confusing. Remember that there are two 'types' of crews working the roads, Caltrans(outside the park) and NPS(inside the park).by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I know someone that wants to hike to Half Dome in the first week of May. She finishes her first year of college then, and wants to do it then before summer gets too busy (other trips, college volleyball team training, etc.) I've been up several times, so I know with all of the snow there will be several issues on the trail. Mist Trail should be open by then. Will sub-dome still have snow? Cablby snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I got to Yosemite Valley at 9:15 Wednesday morning (drove from L.A.), started my hike at 9:30. I did Upper Yosemite Falls trail. I think that it might be the hardest hike that I have ever done. It was a great time. I need to start a new thread regarding ratings of hikes.by snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I am driving up to Yosemite from L.A. early Wednesday morning. I should get to Yosemite by 9 AM (Hopefully Interstate 5/Grapevine is OK by then). I was thinking of going for a hike, approx 8-10 miles, off of Glacier Point Road. Possibly Dewey Point and then back to the car. Camp at Upper Pines Wednesday night. Going to try and get the campsite for another night. Go for another hike Thursdby snorkus - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
