Kewl. Saw ur vehickle on way out Sunday. Only one left in any of the bp parking areas. Went and checked it out up close and personal on Sunday after hiking out from Miguel and Eleanor wit z Old Dood. After further inspection from older photos... there were "only" a few oaks on that slope... So although a whole lotta rock came down... Old Dood, Chick-on said a really good present to get you would be an "Old Age Card". He said you been playing that one for years now and he's pretty certain that that baby is all dog-eared and worn out. Went to the card store and they said that that card never wears out and can be played as many times as the user deems necessary. So... Jim, From the Crest to Matthes Lake is all Class 2. No question. Below Echo Ridge just head east-ish toward Cockscomb... and then head down. Believe me. It's very very simple xcountry. You have to be up on the rim before you can camp. It's self reg now so permits are not an issue. If you go to the valley directly from 140 then you go to the Vistor Center to get a permit... but there are no quotas this time of year. Depending on snow pack I'll come in 120 and have permit already at BOF entrance and never talk to anyone. Nice. Was at Hetchy Hetchy Fri and Sat. (spent night at Poopenaut) Saturday at noon... not a single other person at the dam or anywhere else. The lack of snow is just crazy. And the water level is controlled so, although it's kinda strange for the res. to be that high now... it make sense. Ok. So that statement about not parking at Badger Pass was b/c I explicitly called last year to see if could park there... and they said no. So... had to hike from Chinquapin ... This sign would lead one to believe otherwise though: But then there is the "road closed/admin traffic/yadda yadda yadda" sign right at the entrance to Badger Pass... so go figure. OK. There is a lot of talk about Cables down. Maybe this will help someone in the future. This is what I wrote to Steve on May 15th. It's nice to hear people using Prusik. I wouldn't go up again w/o it. Not worth the risk imo (been there... done that) Quoteme The quick answer is that I would bring crampons if I were doing it THIS year now. I wouldn't chance it. Quotehikerchick395 Last year, on Nov 17th, I walked east up from Olmstead Point. Don't know if that is a named dome. A bit more snow last year. Again gained some good views. East? If really east then that would be the BM 8664. I've never heard of a name for it. And that is a steep going from Olmsted. The one north of Olmsted, tann showed some pix from there recently. Quotehikerchick395 Took a look at this route on Thursday...too much snow/ice...north facing slope and all. But I'll be heading up there next year. So I took my first (!) hike up Pothole Dome. Why I had never been up there yet...I don't know. With only a foot o snow you can just stay in the trees... and it's safe. Of course you post hole thru early snow so maybe not your cup o tea. I doubt that a teenage boy would find that hike bland. There is always some water in the creek. And I think you'd be surprised at how much water is flowing in the creek now. Great views along the way imo. Wawona Dome... At the 'top' there is much to explore. I realize you want photo of the wire itself.... but here is what I saw on old 4 Mile section. I almost always take a photo of tube stuff. I don't explicitly recall any coiled stuff out there. I'd guess that it is a counting device. Probably you came across it on the Half Dome trail. They have had them there in the past. I've also seen them near Crabtree on the west side of Whitney. There was more than likely another item on the other side of the trail.
