I and 4 others climbed Half Dome on Saturday, July 30. We got our HD permits when we picked up our backcountry permit in the Wilderness Center. They are dated. There are 300 day use permits and 100 backcountry permits issued per day Friday through Sunday and all holidays. We arrived at the subdome on Saturday at 1100, coming from near Sunrise. Is overnight camping allowed at the Cathedral Lakes? Have read it is at the Upper Lake but not the Lower. Will be trekking through the area in July 2010. Thanks, Markby mschaefer - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Does anyone know if overnight camping is allowed at the Cathedral Lakes? Have heard that the Upper Lake is allowed but not the Lower. Would be planning a late July 2010 backpacking trip, and since the last time I was in the Lakes area there was a Baja hurricane churning rain and cold all the way to Yosemite, I never was even able to see Cathedral Peak through the clouds. Climbed in early June to the "Diving Board" on the NW shoulder of Half Dome and wanted to give you our route (thanks to Bernardo at the Curry Village Mountaineering Shop for route instructions). Depart from the Happy Isles Trailhead for the top of Nevada Falls. You can take either the Mist Trail (2.5 miles) or the John Muir Trail (4 miles), the latter trail being slightly less steep aby mschaefer - General Discussion
On Saturday, June 4, our hiking party was having lunch around noon above Nevada Fall. We saw a red helicopter swing very fast and low into the Merced river canyon between Nevada and Vernal Fall, hover a half minute over the river as if looking for someone who had fallen in, and then fly away. Does anyone know if there was a hiker who had tragically fallen into the river along the Mist Trail? Wby mschaefer - General Discussion
Can anyone tell me the best way to get to the Diving Board on Half Dome's SW shoulder? I have heard of a route from the top of Nevada Falls around Lost Lake, and another from the gully between Liberty Cap and Mt. Broderick. Will be there in 2 weeks, and the cables are not planned to be up until June 16 presently. Any advice appreciated. Mark Schaefer Wauwatosa, WIby mschaefer - General Discussion
