It's a bit long, because I combined trip reports from Mt. Dana, where I met Gene, and being in the Desolation Wilderness last weekend. http://moosetracksca.wordpress.com/2011/09/08/grab-life-and-run-with-it-because-you-never-know/ Apeman, a pleasure to meet you and your daughter as well. Most excellent, my feathered delight. I'd give you a big kissie but that whole big-nose to beak thing just wouldn't work. And, oh no... I NEVER have fun. Make a point of not having fun. Howdy all you northern, Yosemite-type folks! Anyone been hiking down from Twin Lakes into the Matterhorn area yet this season? Pics would be extra-wonderful! Thanks, Lby MooseTracks - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I wouldn't drop any plans yet. It may be cold, but accumulations of only a few inches? Plus, it looks as if the pattern is staying pretty far north... http://www.intellicast.com/Local/Map.aspx?location=USCA0103by MooseTracks - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Chick-on, We were originally planning on following the ridge all the way to Tuolumne, a traverse I've wanted to do for a year. But snow conditions on the north side were HARD and slick, and neither of us had bothered to bring crampons. Poop. Well, you live, you learn. I'll be back there next summer for another shot. Besides, that road out to 120 is LONG at the end of the day! -L Here's anoby MooseTracks - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

The ultimate evil in gear: steapandcheap.com It's the instant markdown outlet of backcountryoutlet.com. You download an announcement bar to your desktop, and about every 20-30 minutes they bring up the "deal of the moment". You can check out the inventory from which they draw at bco, and it's random, so it's very much an instant gratification sort of thing. That wolf is AWESOME! hehehe... The first time I drove through Tuolumne (a long, long time ago, I can still remember...) Mmm... snow... I have such a love-hate relationship with it. On the one hand, when consolidated, it makes for such a solid, even surface to walk across. I especially love it when the snow has a crispness that the crampons bite in just so and walking is a breeze. On the other, I'm the posthole queen, wallowing in holes up to my thighs and cursing with each step giving way underneath. Especiallby MooseTracks - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Well, technically it's easiest in "spring", which means April-June. The snow has generally consolidated, and the boot track is like a convenient staircase (unless you're like me and posthole THROUGH the existing steps, making for some harder work). The trickiest part is the Final 400, but from now having done it in summer conditions, is not quite as steep (just a bit more exposed) as thby MooseTracks - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
