Glacier Point road opened about 10:30 on May 11. There was a fallen tree on the road that delayed opening. We hung out until it opened then joined the crowd heading up. It was a beautiful day. It was getting crowded by the time we left.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Is this still a thing? The road was paved and striped when we went in last Sunday, and nothing new going on Friday when we left. The dogwoods, waterfalls and flooded meadows were amazing.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I got four nights in Upper Pines, but not my first choice of sites. We usually don't go to the valley in high season, so this was a trial run of the system for a late summer get together.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I will be crossing east to west on Friday returning home from Zion. We are having a great time hiking the east side with no people.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We camped at TM for three nights June 16-19 (report better late than never) and had a great time. These three dayhikes are some we had never done. First, on June 17, we took the free shuttle to Tioga Pass for the hike to Gaylor Lakes and hiked back to TM. This is Upper Gaylor Lake. Granite Lake. The water conditions seemed like mid-summer flow rates and the meadows were dry anby Strix - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We got back Thursday after three nights at TM CG. The low overnight temps were 30, 28, 33. No mosquitos in camp; got swarmed at Elizabeth lake when out of the wind. Everything looks like mid-summer dry up there. Not a lot of wildflowers, some shooting stars in wet spots, penstamons, phlox etc. Lupines, several varieties, are just starting to flower.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the alert. I just booked a few days in mid June. Do you have any control where they stick you? Arrive early and ask for a good spot, I suppose.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
There was moderate to heavy damage all along the mile hike down to the grove, but much less in the grove, mostly ground fire. The Sequoias were unharmed except for some scorched lower branches. Maybe some new seedlings will show up in the bare soil. There are some nice Dogwood flowers down there. It will be a good place to watch forest recovery in the coming years.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We drove up to Tioga Pass bright and early May 3. I guess that worked, so I'll add some more. Tenaya Lake had a bit of ice left. Olmsted Point was dry, as was the road the whole way across. The last pic is glacial polish at Olmsted above the road. We stopped for a hike at Tuolumne Grove; interesting to see the fire effects there.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. There is a hostel at Fort Mason, which is a great location. I walked through it a couple of years ago,and it had a very lively, international vibe. There are two others in the city. One big diff I see is the parking (free at Fort Mason). Edit to add I'm talking about S.F. as "The City". http://www.sfhostels.com/by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The release I read a couple days ago read; "...75 miles of trails and nearby roads." It looks like not more than half of that is trails. Pretty cool though, and I'm looking forward to more. Here is a view of their rig near the Black Bridge. http://goo.gl/maps/ysz40by Strix - General Discussion
Google Earth has destroyed the Quarter Domes. I went there to check the terrain relating to this subject and the elevation data is screwed up. I'm sure it was good not too long ago because I use G-E to fly around Yosemite Valley often. That sounds like an amazing ski adventure.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
In the East Bay Giant Sequoias can be found in many places, including several groves in Tilden Park. In Lakeside Park (Lake Merritt) there is a spot where one can stand within ten yards of all three Sequoia species; Coast Redwood, Giant Sequoia, and Dawn Redwood.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. The skyline East to N-E of Chalone Peak (about 3300') is pretty much blocked by peaks and ridges from 3300' to 3900' that would block the Sierra. There may be gaps to peek through though. A quick browse on GoogleEarth didn't look promising.by Strix - General Discussion
Don't stop there. A few minutes later it will pass over Rexburg ID, then directly over Jackson Hole airport, WY. Here is a link to a good source of overlays for Google earth. I was there a few years ago in Sept. Contrary to Jay, we carried only a small amount of water from the TH. At North Dome, I left the wife and gear while I went for water. Royal Arch Cr. had a little water but I didn't like the look of it so went to Lehamite, which was flowing clear and cold. I quickly drank my fill and packed two gallons in a water bag and headed back, carrying it hobo style usinby Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

B. The last time we hiked it we used the TM Shuttle. The driver knew exactly what we were talking about (we called it the 'climbers trail') and dropped us off at the spot. We hiked out the regular trail. I'll never hike up the regular trail again.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I agree, doing it as a loop is better than two out and back hikes. However, the RIGHT way is clockwise; Taft Point, Pohono, Sentinel Dome.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It shouldn't be much of a problem to hike out in the dark. Just pay attention to landmarks on your way in. But even better would be to stay overnight; it's a great place for sunrise too. All you would need is a sleeping bag, ground cloth, emergency bivvy, some water and a breakfast snack. (Check the weather forecast before committing to this) And a permit.by Strix - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
