Obsessed and...envious of chick-on's 14 or 15 exploits this year. Likes: Can't get enough of the high country. Dislikes: The Valley in the summer. Favorite memory: Hiking to LYV with my 2 year daughter on my back (I was so much younger then). 2nd favorite memory: Sitting on the Curry Village Lodge porch with my morning coffee and watching it snow 5" in 2 hours. My brother-in-law and other friends had reservations for Coldwater Campground in the Mammoth Lakes loop for June 22-26. Reserve America called them today and informed them that all reservations for the period June 5 (today) until June 24 had been cancelled due to snow and weather.by btnicholas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I tent camped in Upper Pines in April 2005. On Friday - somewhat cold but clear. Got up the next morning to gray skies, went to Curry for coffee, sat on the lodge porch drinking coffee and staring at HD and it started to snow. Sat and watched it snow for about an hour - 5"! Went back to the campground to find the tent buried. Went back to Curry and rented a "heated" tent cabin forby btnicholas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Yup...Yup. I actually had to yell at a "neighbor" who was running his noisy generator at 10pm last summer in New Shady Rest in Mammoth. After that incident I proposed to the camp host that they should put the RV's and large trailers in Old Shady Rest across the street and leave New Shady Rest to the tent campers.by btnicholas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Going to YV this Friday from SoCal. I prefer to go up 395 to 120 so we can hike in the high country that day before going into the valley. What's the chances of the Tioga Road remaining open?by btnicholas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I happen to be a gun owner(sport skeet & clay shooting). My take on gun ownership is: - No guns in National Parks...PERIOD! - Stricter gun control on hand guns. - The NRA(I once was a member) is a fringe extremist group whose views are outdated and don't apply to our society today. - No sale of automatic rifles to the general public. For what purpose do they need them? - I am not opposed to hby btnicholas - General Discussion
I would much rather be in "The Shrine" instead of stuck in suburbia listening to all the politics. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it there until New Years. Thanks always for providing alternative reading material about my favorite place on earth!by btnicholas - General Discussion
Four years ago, my family was camped in Upper Pines. We tow 5x8 enclosed U-Haul trailer with roll-up rear door, for all the camping supplies. One night my wife and I had gone to bed and the kids stayed up playing cards. They went into the trailer to get soft drinks out of the ice chests, rolled the door down but forgot to latch it. About 12:30am, after everyone else had gone to bed, I heard the rby btnicholas - General Discussion
I did the Panorama Trail to LYV with my extended family in 2005. While on the hike they sometimes complained about the climb out of Ill, but when we got back to Curry, they all agreed it was one of the best hikes they had ever taken.by btnicholas - General Discussion
Found the answer to my own question: Fires still burning in Kings Canyon and Sequoia NP Monday, 15 September 2008 The hazy skies and smoky smell wafting around Mammoth over the past week are due to fires in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National parks southeast of town. The Hidden Fire, which was ignited in Sequoia National Park by lightning on Sept. 10, continues to show growth in spite of aggreby btnicholas - General Discussion
Does anyone know of any fires around Yosemite? When I looked at the webcams this morning, it looked like smoke. I checked the Mammoth Lakes morning report and Snowman showed a panorama video shot with what he said "was haze from fires on the westside of the Sierras.by btnicholas - General Discussion
It seems like it is just this Ranger as I have used my pass on both the Tioga Road(120) and south entrance(41) and they didn't even take it. I showed it to them and they said "thanks" and that was that.by btnicholas - General Discussion
This is exactly the reason I stopped taking my family to "The Valley" for vacation 4 years ago. Now we either camp in Mammoth Lakes or Tuolumne on our vacation. Less crowded, no loud/inconsiderate campers, cooler weather and the scenery and hikes are just as good. If we want to go to the valley, we just make it a day trip and get there early in the morning with stove, cookwear and foodby btnicholas - General Discussion
We were in Tuolumne and the Valley on Thurs., 7/31 and it was clear and beautiful. Watched the sun set in Tuolumne heading back to Mammoth. Can't wait for the next trip in October.by btnicholas - General Discussion
