Very cool. I went up to Dana Village 3 weeks ago and had the entire place to myself. Really cool place to be in the late season, when the brown grass somehow accentuates its ghost town nature. I also took a side hike over to the Granite Lakes, which I had seen on the map but never visited before. What a beautiful spot - and again completely devoid of other people! Judging by the number of fire rings in hunting-prohibited Yosemite National Park in fire-restricted areas, I'm going to go ahead and guess that stupid people come in both hunting and non-hunting forms. So halting hunting--- about as effective as banning stupidity in this case, although the latter would be awesome if only it were possible.by Ryno98 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Definitely agree with the shake down trip closer to home. It has been said that "the weight of your pack is equal to the sum of your fears". Aside from buying as light of equipment as you can find (which gets expensive quickly), the only "cure" I've found for the weight problem is fresh memories of carrying a pack with WAY to much weight. That really helps to ease the decisby Ryno98 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I was in Yosemite last May with my 2 and 4 year old daughters. Let me say it was definitely a challenge and considerably different from being there with just me and the wife, but completely worth every second. We had a Kelty backpack kid carrier for the 2 year old which worked well, but obviously it's impossible to carry a 4 year old in one of those. I found a carrier for older kids called theby Ryno98 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
packenvy, you pretty much nailed it. Did it on 5/21. Stayed dry with gore tex trail runners on Delaney (log upstream) and Dingley (rocks) until just before California Falls. Tons of mosquitos around Dingley and Delaney for me but only if you stopped moving (like when your wife has to change shoes because she doesn't want to cross on the log...). Appreciate some of the other posts w/ regard to snow at various elevations. I will be in Yosemite starting Sat. night for 4 days, but I only have arrangements for one "kid-free" hike, which is significant with kids as young as mine... Quoteplawrence Back in the 1990's the Park Service dealt with this problem for one or two summers by simply limiting the amount of vehicles that could enter the park at any one given time. But they did have a de facto "permit" system in place in such as anyone who had an overnight reservation at one of lodging properties (Curry Village, the Ahwahnee, Yosemite Lodge, the Wawona) or haby Ryno98 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'm consistenly conflicted regarding my opinion on this issue. While I certainly like the opportunity to use the cables to get to the top of HD when I please, I'm not against SOME form of keeping that an enjoyable experience at least in the form of avoiding waiting for hours to get on insanely crowded cables. I'm hoping for something! I brought my parents to Yosemite from Texas a few years ago for the first time in October. Had a blast, hiked Clouds Rest from Tenaya, minimal crowds, etc but I could tell my mom was disappointed at the fact the waterfalls were dried up (even though I had warned her that this is normal for late fall). I completely understand the reasoning and necessity behind the burns, but it does kinda seem that every time I plan a Yosemite trip there is some major burn going on with ash raining down and smelling like an old campfire everywhere I go. I had backpacked several times before, and only decided to backpack in Yosemite after exhausting all of the popular day hikes and really being tempted by the things on the map I just couldn't get to in one day. I planned a trip in September mirroring the southern portion of the high sierra camp loop (after the camps had closed). If we could also find a way to keep any children, elderly, or disabled people out of the park so that only able-bodied hemp necklace wearing vegans with backpacks could access the valley (but only for 2 days per week for 6 hours at a time) that would be great too. Good expectations. I have encountered mosquitoes at that time of year but mainly in wet areas that are protected from the wind. The exposed areas were no prob. I hiked to Mono Pass this time last year and did not see a single person. Hiked to Clouds Rest and saw maybe 5-6 people. There is a pretty easy scramble up the surrounding peaks as you go through Mono pass as well. Great views similar to Dana there. The cabins are a pretty neat little side hike.
