I myself have had rangers waaaaay in the outback come up to me and request to see my can ... even while hiking along ... "Hi there, would you mind pulling over ... set your emergency brake ...may we see your permit and your can?" They're pretty nice to run into ,, and always offer an immediate conditions update ahead. The National Park's website clearly states: Open trails aren't necessarily free of hazards--by entering the wilderness, you assume responsibility for your safety and must use good judgment.
