The 120 - 6 - 264 - 266 - 95 route is the shortest route from Yosemite to Las Vegas and is very popular during the summer. Much of it is at relatively high elevation; Sagehen Summit, Montgomery Pass and Lida Summit are all over 7,000 feet, so it is substantially cooler. That's the route I would take. The 168 has many curves and is thus a lot slower.by Bob Weaver - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If it was taken from the valley floor, then how could you see the snow on top of El Capitan? It seems like it could have been taken from some place like Taft Point or some other point on the south rim of the valley. Just wondered.by Bob Weaver - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Just outside the park's eastern entrance (Tioga Pass) is Ellery Lake and it's well worth the few minutes drive over there. It's not the really the lake itself that is photogenic, it's the huge slope behind it that leads up to the Dana Plateau that is the spectacle. It's the same rock shown in the black-and-white photos above. It's even visible from some locations on the valley floor if you look carefully or use binoculars. It's at Glacier Point, sort of to the west of the paved, wall-in parts of the point. It's easy to find pictures (old and new) of people standing or sitting on that rock, even though falling from it would mean certain death. One minute after I took the above picture, a kid about 16 or 17, walked out onto the rock and posed while his family took pictures of him. Dozens of people were standing around in the walled-in area of the point and nobody said a word. I think like me, many of them were stunned by it and couldn't speak or didn't know what to say. I bought a copy of it at a gas station in Oakhurst (I'm pretty sure the Valero station), for the published price of $4.95. It seems likely that gas stations and convenience stores along Highway 395 will carry it, as it is the most appropriate map for that area. However I never stopped to look for it while driving the 395 so I can't say for sure. It has been a very useful map, although I do wishby Bob Weaver - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. If you don't want to drive your RV around the park, there are buses and shuttles in some areas; some are free and run by the park service, others are paid trips. I would choose Crane Flat because of its location. Wawona is about an hour drive from Yosemite Valley. Crane Flat is maybe a 30 minute drive from Yosemite Valley, and it is also at the start of Tioga Road. So Crane Flat would be the better location if you were planning to visit both Yosemite Valley and the sights along Tioga Road including Tuolumne Meadows. Two questions about this area: What is the name for the dome right next to Tenaya Lake? It begins literally across the road from the lake. I don't believe the WIkipedia article. I believe Stephen King stayed at the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, and that's what inspired him to write "The Shining." But it wasn't filmed at the Stanley. Some shots for the 1980 film were shot at the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, Oregon and some shots were filmed in Yosemite, but the Stanley Hotel wasn't used. When you make the reservation, you give your name, which must match the name on your credit card, and that name is associated with the reservation and printed on the permit. I used Kodachrome 25 for many years. What a great film - extremely fine grain, rich, saturated colors, and to my eyes it captured colors accurately.
