I have reservations for Tuolumne Meadows Aug 15 thru 22. I am concerned if the smoke will diminish the clarity of the air to ruin the views. I will be traveling from Utah. I really dont want to make the trip if the smoke will ruin the visibility enough to ruin the trip. Does anybody know how bad the smoke is? Thank You.by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Has anybody that has been to Tuolumne Meadows this year know if the hikers and backpackers shuttle buses are running. I am planning a trip in a couple of weeks and have a truck camper and I prefer not to unload the camper to get to trailheads.. It would be very difficult to park a truck with camper in the bed at trail heads. In years past except for last year the shuttle busses made it very convby jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Ok I asked this question last year at this time but because of health reasons I was not able to make it to Tuolumne Meadows last yr. Hopefully I can make it this yr. So, did the hikers shuttle bus operate last year and if not did it create a lot of problems such as parking at trail heads. And does anybody know if it will be operating this year?by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So I am supposed to be hiking in the Tuolumne Meadows area next week. Is the smoke just too much for this to be a good trip ? I am wondering if I should cancel. It is a 10 hr drive from Salt Lake City Thanksby jimbo - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
So is it running or not? I am going to be there in 2 weeks and because of my vehicle (Dodge crew cab Dual rear wheel truck carries a truck camper which I can off load) it is not going to be easy trying to park at trailheads.by jimbo - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Is the hikers shuttle bus running in Tuolumne Meadows and are they still charging a fee ?by jimbo - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I have heard that the hikers shuttle bus may be discontinued in Tuolumne Meadows. Has any one heard if they will be operating this summer?by jimbo - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks again QITNL, I really appreciate the response! I have been up to Echo peaks from Budd and followed the ridge all the way around to Matthes Crest to Cockscomb to Unicorn and back down to Elizebeth. Awsome hike!by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks QINTL. Great photos. It looks like the hike I am planning. Is that going up the ridge between lower and upper Cathedral lks towards Trssider and Tenaya peaks? A year ago I went part way up that ridge comming back from somewhere else and ran out of time so this year I want to get to the top and follow it across.I know others have done it from reading other posts and it looks like a great hiby jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I know this has been answered elsewhere, I just can't find it. Where exactly is the shortcut trail to lower Cathedral lake off Tioga Rd. I know there are at least 2 turnouts over there. I;ve stopped in the turnouts last year but couldn't seem to find the trail. Thank you all in advance for your help.by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
There are also some forst service campgrounds up Lee Vining Canyon a few miles from Lee Vining up Tioga Pass Rd. The first one as you go up the canyon is the largest. I have stayed there several times and have always been able to get a site even on weekends. It's about 30 miles from Tuolumne Meadows. Have fun.by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I was able to secure a week in Tuolumne Meadows in August with no problem. However I have in the past not had any problems securing a site in Tuolumne by just showing up, as long as it wasn't on a Friday or Satuturday night. I didn't even arrive early in the morning.by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was there the first week in Sept. Mosquitos were a non issue in the campground. Hiked to upper and lower Cathedral, Tresider Peak, Sunrise lakes, Clouds rest, Volgosang, Up Lyell Canyon, around Elizebeth, The ridges up around Echo peaks, Mathes Crest, Etc. Mosquitos wern't a problem. Had a little breeze at lower Cathedral Lake where mosquitos are usually a problem so I didn't encounter any therby jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I spent a week hiking in the Tuolemne area about three weeks ago. I usually hike solo, not because I nessessarily want to but because I usually can't get anyone to go with me. Most people I know arn't into hiking or they don't want to put in the kind of miles I do in a day or they are not in shape enough to keep up. It has never bothered me if someone wants to chat a bit or tag along as long asby jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I have camped in Tuolumne Meadows campground numerous times. I have gone there with a reservation for just one night. When I arrived I just let them know I wanted to extend my stay for another six nights. No problem. They extended it for the same site. I didn't have to show up the next morning to get a non-reserved site. They did it for me at the time I checked in for my reserved site.by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
As a retired Deputy sheriff from Los Angeles, hearing about incidents like that send a chill up my spine. Great fast thinking on the Rangers part. Definately happy the Ranger wasn't hurt.by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Speaking of unatural things supported by the Park service, how about the rock dam maintained by the Park service that keeps Nevada falls from it's natural course. Does the Park service still maintain this?by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I hike alone fairly often mostly because I can't find anyone to go with me. This year I did the ridge from echo to mathes crest to unicorn solo. Didn't feel at all uncomfortable. I live at 5800 ft and run regularly 5 miles a day. I train with weights (squats etc to build legs) Never felt the effects of altitude. Legs felt strong. In fact I felt so good I went down to Mathes Crest lake then over tby jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Bill-e-g Keep posting these things. Just because you don't recieve many comments does'nt mean people are not interested. I, for one really enjoy your postings of different locations and I seriously consider visiting all of them. Some of them I would not know about without you posting them. Please keep it up. This really bugs me too. I was backpacking in Utah one time and my map showed a fresh water spring. I arranged my route to replenish my water supply there. When I got there it was in the middle of a cow pasture with about 40 head of cows. The cows were trampling in the spring, urinating, crapping, etc. Needless to say the water was contaminated. And it was supposed to be wilderness! Horses to,by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Just got back from TM on July25. Had a great time. Thanks to all for sugestions on hiking routes, especially bill-e-g. I took your advice on a couple routes. 1st was that I did go up from Elizibeth Lake to the saddle just south of Unicorn, followed the ridge past Coscomb over to Echo peaks back to Matthes Ridge. From there I went down to Mathes Lake up over the saddle to Nelson Lake and back to Eby jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks bill-e-g for another map. I print out all of them. I hope it's cool with you. They are a trmendous help and give great routs. About the above posts about ill prepared people, thats why I solo hike most of the time. Thanks bill-e-g. Great shot of Whaterweel with the rainbow! What type of camera equipment do you use? It seems LeConte falls has more of the waterweel features than the actual Waterweel falls. I seem to remember a documentary on Yosemite a few years back and I beleve what they thought was Waterweel was probably LeConte also. I'm starting to think that where I was at 6 years ago was LeConte. Goby jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Now I definately have to do the hike next week to make sure that what I saw was Waterwheel falls. bill-e-g, do you have any pictures of Waterwheel falls that I can compare mine to? Thanksby jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Just to clarify. bill-e-g are you saying that the video posted by wrecksduke on July 13 is not Waterwheel falls?by jimbo - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I think waterwheel falls is well worth seeing. My son and I did it about six years ago and I'm thinking strongly about doing it again next week when I am in that area. tomdisco Do you ever get that look from people like your crazy. Most everyone I know says you need to relax and go on a cruise or to a nice hotel and be pampered for vacation. I remember getting started into backpacking in the early seventy's. First pack I borrowed did not have any hipband just shoulder straps, a crappy heavy sleeping bag and a small tarp for under my sleeping bag. Then I saw my first high country lake and I forgot about the discomforts of the pack. I was hooked!
