Wow, what time did you start? How long did it take you guys to run/hike the whole thing? What did you guys carry, water filter included?by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Nice google earth image and captions. Just to clarify, Bill-e-g flipped the image 180 degrees correct? WW is "northwest" of Le Conte.by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
OK. Clear that we did not get to the ONE, REAL Waterwheel falls. I'm still happy with our BP trip. We will eventually hike the whole Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne and THEN we'll see Waterwheel. Thanks for educating us. Le Conte was awesome still.by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Well Bill-e-g should know. I'm crushed. We went with a 76 year old guy who supposedly KNEW the falls. Apparently they were wrong in 1960 as well. I still thought they were impressive. Not sure if its worth going back for ONE waterwheel. So how much further was it to Waterwheel Falls?by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I think Sierra Nomad was at water wheel. I have video I took last weekend. I DON'T KNOW how to get it here though. Advice?by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We just got back from TM through past GA HSC to Waterwheel falls trip. We made the unfortunate decision to wait for our late arriving friends who drove up the 99 instead of 395. After waiting about 2 hours at the stable parking lot, we finally left - leaving the other part of their family to wait for them. We left about 12:30 and got to our camp just past GA HSC around 5pm. We left 91040 zip code area (north of Burbank) at 4:30 am. Friends left at 5am from similar location. We headed up 5, 14, 395, to 120 Tioga pass. We got to the ranger station at about 10:15. They took the 99, 41 etc. They didn't arrive until around 12:40. We got stopped on Tioga for about 15 minutes. I think they got stopped several times. Phew, glad I opted for the scenic AND ultimatelyby wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hey Traildad, we're off to TM early tomorrow morning and plan on hiking to/past GA HSC. If HSC is not open, it might be a good place to camp if its marshy beyond GA HSC. I'll let you know how it is. Our 9 and almost 11 year old kids have BPed for the past 5 years. Sounds like the creek crossings are no big deal. Still be careful. I think I fear/loathe the onslaught of mosquitos the worse.by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
uh oh. I'M from Bakersfield. It was a great place to grow up. Sorry I didn't grow up "street-wise" there. Just had fun, running around barefoot and enjoying the outdoors. We were the country bumpkins compared to my nerdy cousins in Berkeley and San Francisco.by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Just north of Burbank. 91040 zip code. Weird huh. I like going up the 395. I love the Sierras. No BP trips this year on the Eastern side. Because of all the great snow we got this year, I had to reschedule my BP trip from TM through GA HSC to this week. Now we have to drive up same day as permit start date. See how work gets in the way. Sooo, I'm trying to pick the fastest way up so I caby wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was going to take 395 up to Tioga to get to TM. Mapquest says its almost 2 hours shorter and 100 miles less to go up the 99. Any recommendations? What about road closures due to road repair/rock slides in the valley? Thanks in advance!by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I think those new clip on repellents may work if you are stationary. It operates with a little fan, blowing repellent vapors out a limited space. Watch the commercials and look at the packaging closely. The people are all sitting or laying down. Even if you are sitting, if there is a wind/breeze, I assume you will be wasting your money too.by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thanks for the advice everyone! Time to move on and make plans for my now free weekend in June. Maybe a day hike to the top of Mt. Baldy - after a possible overnight at the Sierra Hut. Something close, challenging for the kids and a rewarding goal.by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks everyone! I just changed it to July 8-11. The reservationist, Lissy, did not recommend sticking wtih my dates of June 18-20. Aaaaah. I hope I'm not making a bad decision by giving up my June dates. Its a gamble. If I wait until the weekend to get the trip report, then the July dates could be gone. July should/could still be good right :-| ? Whatcha folks think?by wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
HELP! We have wilderness permits for June 18-20 for this trailhead. I heard the other day that water is over the bridges (two crossings of Tuolomne river?) and is impassable. Any ideas from the experienced backpackers/hikers if the conditions will be passable in JUST another week? We also do not want to be miserable hiking through slushy snow, mud or foot-2 foot deep water. We're not wimps bby wrecksduke - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
