Sounds good, thanks. And I guess it'll be good reconnaissance for the next trip because, one of these days, I am finally going to time it right to see the show! (Two years in a row, 2010 and 2011, I won early Glen Aulin dates in the lottery, only to not have the HSCs open. So this time, I tried for, and got later dates, but we know how that is turning out. Still, a great hike, and I am going tby Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hello. I have two nights at Glen Aulin this weekend (plus a night at May Lake). Was originally planning to do a day hike down the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne during the stopover day, but given low water conditions, not sure that is the best option this year. Do folks have suggestions on recommended day hikes around Glen Aulin? We are hiking into Glen Aulin from Tuolumne Meadows, and thby Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I write as someone who has a fear of heights/vertigo issue. My fear of heights is such that, when I did Half Dome in 2003, I deeply regretted it -- getting down was very tough for me and I felt lucky to get down safely. That said, I did the Yosemite Falls hike this year, up to the overlook, and onto Yosemite Point, and I enjoyed it very much. There was a section near the overlook where theby Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Well, this is off topic, but the most recent report on the family on Whitney described them with three kids -- two around 4-5 yrs, plus a 1 year old in a carrier. Apparently, they were still heading up to the summit on Friday when folks coming down were reporting direct lightning hits on the summit shelter, and electricity in the air was making hair and poles sing. (Later that day, they were seby Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
See, this is one (of many) reasons why I admire the Chick-on. Because the Chick-on goes where I fear to tread. And takes amazing pictures. I'm not yet comfy with navigating and class 3 off-trail. Was doing a solo backpack (albeit with pup), also a new thing to me. Though I read "the area between Kennedy Lake and Lost Lake was REALLY spectacular," and I salivate.by Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ah, the maniacal, pooping cows, yes indeed. This one fixed on me with an intense stare from a hundred yards away. She started to walk towards me, and then started to charge me. I yelled "No," as if I was disciplining my dog or something. Surprisingly, she stopped running. I then started walking down the trail, not looking at her. She got on the trail in back of me, and followeby Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I did Kennedy Lake a few weeks back ... beautiful hike ... nice campsites (some with fire rings) near the creek, before you get to the lake itself. This website describes it: http://www.sonorapassvacations.com/hikes/kennedy_lake_hike.html Oops, sorry, you wanted dayhikes. This would be doable but a little long (maybe 14 miles RT).by Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Usually, the topo maps are loaded onto your hardrive. Then, when you are planning a trip, you load the maps you want onto your GPS. Generally, you do not load the entire mapset onto your GPS (insufficient memory unless you have some sort of removable memory, which my Garmin 60CSX does not have). You can, however, load an awful lot of maps onto the Garmin 60CSX ... I loaded a bunch a few monthsby Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I love my Garmin 60CSX and use it all the time. I took a class at REI one evening, after I bought it, and in about 1.5 hours, I learned how to use it. You need to either buy or download topo maps to get the most from it. There is national parks topo this is very high quality and very accurate (has all the trails already on it). There is also a 100K nationwide topo that is pretty good (has aby Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Ditto ditto ditto re Mono Pass hike. Spectacular. Especially with the snow caps. Keep going a little bit beyond Mono Pass to get the best views.... I think some of the camps may open earlier. I had reservations for Glen Aulin and May Lake over July 4 weekend which they cancelled last week. At that point, they were not sure whether the opening would be delayed a week, few weeks, a month, etc.... they just knew that they would not be able to accommodate July 4. They also mentioned that Tuolumne Meadows probably would not be open in time foby Akichow - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
