Quotebalzaccom Lots of nice hikes there. Winnemucca Lake and its environs...from a shorter hike to 14miles rt to 4th if July Lake and back. Heading North to Mess Meadows, Round Lake, Dardanelles Lake etc. Beautiful stuff. We have photos a reports on our website backpackthesierra.com. look under destinations, highway 88. We've got a site in the Kit Carson Campground, off 88, south of Lake Tahoe, for mid-August. I was cruising around on ReserveAmerica and the idea of camping in the aspens has always appealed to me, so I booked a weekend there. I'm researching things to do in the area. There are several hikes listed nearby, so I doubt we'll have trouble finding something to do with ourselves. But, of couby itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Sorry to necro this thread, but my questions are related, I promise! Q1: Any idea on the opening Bridalveil Creek Campground for 2017? Obviously it's hard to predict, but based on your experience, do you think it's a good option for July camping this year? Q2: If July is unlikely, what about Aug or early Sept?by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Great info! We aren't going until late May, so I'm just not starting to plan activities. And it'll all depend on weather and what my in-laws have planned. I've never been there, so I am more inclined to hit the highlights throughout the park, and then save regional discovery hikes for another visit.by itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We've booked camping spots elsewhere (Richardson Grove, up north), but will keep an eye on conditions. Last year we camped in Inyo in the Junction campground, and I'm kinda thinking it might be my new favorite FCFS camping option on Tioga Road. Of course, it's at a higher elevation than Tuolumne Meadows campground, so I'm not holding out much hope.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So much snow! I mean, I'm happy about the snow and all. Who doesn't like more drinking water all summer? But I'm still kinda bummer we're probably going to have to spend our July 4th anniversary somewhere other than Tuolumne Meadows.by itchbay - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

We looked at the openings yesterday and there were two spaces at Sunrise HSC for mid Sept, which sounds like a good compromise between the crush of August and the cold of October.by itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I think my MIL would like this. Unfortunately for her, caves and I do not do well together. I will suggest this to her for her "free day"though!by itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
So, is Giant Forest worth visiting?by itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I was just informed that I misunderstood his proposed trip. He wants to actually sign up with the HSC, so we'd only be hauling our water and lunch/snacks food. The idea being since we don't have to buy packs and gear (we have a band-new, still-with-tags backpacker tent from our wedding a coupe of years ago, but that's for another trip I guess) it'll be a good half-step toward becoming real baby itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

My beloved's mother has delightfully offered to treat us to a trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon in May. She's rented a cabin on 198 close to the Sequoia entrance gate, and the only thing we have to bring is ourselves. Swanky right?? I've never ever ever been to Sequoia and have no idea what kind of day hiking is available in that area, although I understand it can be a lovely place to see big tby itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We're longtime car-campers (glampers?) and day-hikers, but we've been talking about doing an overnight backpacking trip for years. Unfortunately we still haven't actually done it -- one thing or another kept getting in the way. But I'm determined that this year will be the year! In the interest of starting out a bit easy, my (probably overly ambitious) beloved had the idea of hiking from Touluby itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the ideas. I've done the part of the Glen Aulin hike back from the bridge a couple of years ago, when we did a jaunt out to see the Little Devil's Postpile, back in 2010: It's nice and flat. I wouldn't mind going back that way and then out a bit further. Our timing is a bit in flux, so we might not be out there until late-July or even early-Aug.by itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hello all! I've been pretty much only lurking for the last year or so while I've been injured and college-ing. But I'm back, and ready to get out on the trails and use my very expensive Environmental Studies and Outdoor Leadership degree. We're tying the knot on July 4, and planning on heading up to TM for our honeymoon in mid-July. The general plan is to hope for a spot in TM from which wby itchbay - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I haven't been posting much lately. It's been too sad that we had to cancel our trip to TM this year. We have a sick cat who needed lots of attention and we couldn't leave him while he was still in crisis mode. He's better-ish now. So here's hoping we can get back on track for a winter visit, assuming I can make my school schedule work.by itchbay - General Discussion

So, any thoughts on whether this will change the proposed opening dates for various campgrounds along the road? I believe that's what it says on the Recreation.gov site, meaning they're not even taking reservations for dates earlier than that. I wouldn't be surprised if it opened earlier, but I'm not going to bank on it. I'm still going to hope for getting one of the FCFS sites in TM, but I'm also making alternative plans. We're going to make a more concerted effort to get out for some camping for our July 4 anniversary (9 years!). We didn't go anywhere last year because of my summer job at the county fair. But, barring a sudden change in employment opportunities, we're making tentative plans for this year.
