I had my own run-in with the difference between a rating and a comfort level by Bishop Pass one cold September evening. I had a bag rated for an extreme of 32 and it got down to 18 that night, and I only had one of those thin 1" inflatable thermarests. It wasn't my best night of sleep. I now take my Exped downmat on every trip, even if I'm sleeping indoors; I swear I sleep better on that thiby ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Good call everyone. After I read the first two replies I remembered my friend telling me that it would take forever to travel just 5 miles in the winter. I'll try to get my shoes earlier and get some hikes in before NYE. Oh, and you're talking about dewey pt from Glacier pt. or the valley floor? Thanks everyone.by ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I hate crowds and I love being out in the Sierra, so with a long weekend for NYE, it seems like the best time to get my feet wet on some nice winter backpacking. I've never gone out in winter before, but I always wanted to. Are there any spots in Yosemite (or south of that down to the LA area) where I can get a good 2-3 night trip in without being too worried? I don't have snowshoes, but I can geby ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yeah if we had to walk to Wawona itself we probably would have sent out the "I'm not okay" on the SPOT and had somebody come pick us up.by ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It was a road, but it got way overgrown after the Ft. Monroe area. I think we were a bit south of the 5 on the road when we started to turn up the mountain. On my waypoint we were off the road, we had climbed to the top to get a better bead on where we were. There were trees coming through the road and the point where we started to go up the mountain was a spot where a rather large tree thatby ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. The Old road is really nice to start for the Pohono trail, I like it because it's so gradual it's a nice warm up for the climb of the pohono trail. Yeah and that is the old road I was talking about on the other thread. I forgot to make that left at New Inspiration that one time and next thing I knew we were on the opposite side of the mountain.by ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was on that road before and for some reason didn't turn left at the Pohono trail at New Inspiration Point. I remember the road turning south, then starting to head east, right around there we diverted so I've never taken it far. I started heading North, once I figured out where I was, and it was actually pretty nice. Looking at Google maps I can see that the road does head down to wawona noby ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It took a long time, I think another 2.5-3 hours. Long enough to saturate my Gore-Tex Paclite jacket.by ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So I got lost on that old road once, I stayed on when I should have moved to the Pohono trail. But looking back, it's actually quite nice and I might want to actually plan to do that trip in the future. What I'm thinking is to actually get up to the peak of the hill once I get around and see the view down to the other side. But It was very dry in October, is there running water anywhere around thby ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It was pretty awesome! The first time I did this trail was 2 years ago during the weekend where something like 900 wildfires were started by lightning, so there was a lot of smoke in the valley. Not to mention no water until Bridalveil. This time it was perfectly clear. We had great views, running water and cool temperatures along the trail. We passed by a group that was going to camp at Deby ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Umm... yeah, I accidentally found myself on that old road and once it goes around the hill it gets scary, not slacklining across the valley scary but movie scary, it's just burnt trees with root spikes sticking out of the ground. I expected a dragon to fly over and persuade us to turn around. Amazing view though. Yeah, I've done it twice from the valley floor; once from El Cap meadow which sucked, because we kept trying to find "shortcuts" accross the river and we just ended up getting tired wasted an hour or two; and once from wawona tunnel which wasn't bad. We're going to plan for this and just keep an eye on the weather, if it gets too cold my friend will probably cancel and we'll try toby ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Nice! Sounds quite perfect, now I can't wait for it to be november.by ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'd like to do the pohono trail -> panorama trail -> LYV (or happy isles via JMT) with a friend in early november (looking at 5,6,7). What should I expect? I've been looking at weather records via wunderground.com for elevated areas around the valley and it looks like highs in the 50's and 60's with lows in the teens. But I'd like to know from people who may have done portions or all of theby ThaFlash_LA - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
