Oh--one more--do you think under any circumstances that the LX5 would be able to capture the Milky Way?by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Couple of questions: When working in Manual with the LX5, do you use a tripod? Second--have you tried (or thought about) using the filter that's available, which supposedly makes outdoor photog better? http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMW-LPL52-52mm-Polarizer-Filter/dp/B001ISKNLE/ref=pd_sim_p_3by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. So--I have an LX-3. I was thinking maybe the LX-5, or waiting until the LX-7? Anyone have any ideas about a small camera that would be great for backpacking? Or anything that could allow for good pics. I like my LX-3, but it is somewhat limited in ability to get "different" pics such as long exposure, etc.by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Cloud's Rest = much better views than HD. You campr near CR and you have the added bonus of being able to watch sunrise from CR summit, which is an incredible sight to see the perfectly pyramid CR shadow and then later the HD shadow going down the Valley and as the sun comes up, coming towards you. Then you can simply go down CR to HD and up it. Beat most of the crowd that way. Remember aboby steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
What is the primary objective--to have a good place to view the Perseids?by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
As an addendum to that--you can look at a map for this stuff--but just adopt an explorer's attitude. E.G., if you go to Elizabeth Lake, which is excellent, scramble up Unicorn peak and then the traverse over to Althusky. Views if the Cathedrals from there are epic. Lots of the Yose landmarks are pretty easy scrambles and lots of fun. Also, no crowds up there for sure!by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ya, that looks Epic! Electra and Rodgers peaks as well, maybe. I could spend a month back there!by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Great advice, Chick-on. As someone who used to prolly be in teh same boat not long ago, I used to be hanged up on getting permits, etc. You are absolutely right--there's a couple of ways to handle this: 1. Become familiar with permit system by calling some knowledgeable rangers, whio will give you the straight scoop; for Yose--209-372-0740; for Inyo, 760-873-2483; also, ask questions on boaby steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Oh, and another thing--the meteors are best seen real high--like over 10,000 feet. Places to consider are maybe Young Lakes, maybe 20 Lakes Basin; Ten Lakes Basin; up by Vogelsang HSC, or down near Bishop pass or somewhere else in the high eastern Sierra.by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Unless your last name is Vanderbilt, do food only. I think the cabins are something like $100 (or more) per COT per night. No thanks. And yes, they are not private. Tent only is much better. You can choose where to camp, etc. E.G., at Glen Aulin, you can hike up onto the rocks a little and have brilliant star views you wouldn't have down under the trees.by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks, Chick. This is great. So, I had planned (using map only) to do essentially your route from Vogelsang Pass, past Gallison Lake and up that drainage to Hell's Hole Pass, but at the top of Hell Hole, hang a right (SSE) and traverse that ridge up to MacClure. You've got a labelled pic in there that seems to indicate that might be do-able. What say you?by steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I am very glad to discover this site--there was a reference to it on the Whitney site. Anyway, I come there every year for a week to 10 days. This past Sept. I came with my 14 y.o. daughter and we hiked from White Wolf up over Ten Lakes Basin down to Glen Aulin and out; and then to Twenty Lakes Basin and then headed down to Bishop to watch the Perseids from up high (camped over 12k) and hikedby steelfrog - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
