Thank god he is safe. Can't imagine how hard it must have been for his folks. Thanks for posting the update. Semi-relatedly, what are the SAR policies in the area? In the east coast, where I live, government picks up the fees for evacuation and SAR unless the party involved was negligent. My understanding is in CO the rescued party pays most if not all the cost. What about in the Sierras? Apoby PamW - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Lots of people don't treat their water. Ran into one this summer on the River trail in Ansel Adams. He claimed to never have gotten sick. AT guru (or nut-case depending on the source) Warren Doyle doesn't treat and urges his disciples not to either. He's thru-hiked more than a dozen times and had giardiasis once, I think. I've read that about 25%of the population is immune. Personally, I'm noby PamW - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Planning on making some more great memories in a week or so, but last November's trip was amazing -- no crowds, beautiful foliage in the valley, snow on top of the rim, wonderful light after a morning rainstorm. Spontaneously hung out with some cool people too. Would have posted earlier, but I just figured out how to post pictures (had to delete the http in the dialog box since mine (Picassa)waby PamW - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thanks David, Good advice. Definitely looking for ways to shorten on the fly. Since I came down with a bad cold and bronchitis, I may not be up to the whole thing either! Do you have other ideas for a good three night beginner backpack that includes good fishing and comparable beauty? Quotechick-on I guess I'm obligated to say sumtin. Never! But I appreciate it. And as I said, have really appreciated the board in general. Awesome, as we say in Massachusetts. As for MT. Washington, we staid in the AMC Lakes of the Clouds Hut and went up and down the Ammonousic trail. So yes, foot power, but not as strenuous as all in one day. Quotebasilbop And Thousand Island Lake (and Garnet and Ediza and...) are infamous for their bears.... Any worse than Yosemite front country campgrounds? The trip reports I've read haven't included bear encounters, although I have seen the cautionary info in many places. Should we be worried if we take the appropriate precautions? Thanks SoCalCPA. I hope you have a great trip! We are planning on fishing too and will be there in two weeks. Definitely an attraction for my daughter. And yes, we have list of light warm things. Hoping for no rain though (but are prepared for the worse) Has anyone camped at Garnet Lake ot taken the trail that runs from the River trail to the mouth of Garnet? Hey everyone, before I get to my question, I just want to say how much I enjoy this forum. Kudos to Chick-on, Eeek, and all the regulars for providing such a great public service to the Yosemite hiking community. Not to mention such a great time suck! I used the information here extensively for my first trip to the park last November (took a few days after a business trip to SF) and had a GREAby PamW - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
