Bears are not hungry for tents, tent campers, clothing, or anything like that. They're hungry for easy food like unlatched bear canisters, granola bars tucked into backpacks, fragrant wrappers stuffed into pants pockets, and so on. Dimond O does not have any availability on Friday, July 13th, other than the Walk Up - First Come First Served sites, and there are only four of them. You already missed the June 15 - July 14 reservation window. You can check the reservation website to see if any nights become available for group campsites, but I wouldn't count on it. Getting a few sites in a non-reservation campground might be possible, but only if those campgrounds open early enough for you. Pork lard? Yikes! Even when I used to eat meat, I never ate pork lard. I make my own "refried" beans. Dried beans, soaked, simmered, seasoned. Then I mash them and dehydrate. Finally I run them thru the Cuisinart to be sure they're really finely chopped and are easy to rehydrate. Seasoning varies ... salsa, cooked onions, cumin, chipotle in adobo, mixed peppers. We did the same thing a few years ago. Are the marmots still there? We had to keep one hand on the bear canisters when opened or those pesky critters would just reach right in! You can search for photos on Picasa pretty easily. I just tried it with "Vernal Falls" (used the 's' because that's more common) and then sorted by date. My son's tent is similar with a slightly smaller footprint. We have not had any trouble finding spots to set it up in the Yosemite backcountry, but we prefer to camp near lakes or streams rather than in view sites out on exposed granite. Rather than camping in the backpacking sites adjacent to Vogelsang HSC, we prefer places that are prettier and just a bit further from civilization. But yoby NacciNW - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
