Any info on when Glacier Point road might open.? I know Tioga road won’t open for quite a while but they usually try to get Glacier Point road open by Memorial Day weekends.by gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Parking has always been tight there but paying to park in a NP after paying an entrance fee is ridiculous. Let’s see if they try to charge me to park my bike. I only go there anyway if it’s raining outside.by gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
According to the NPS an early access lottery will be used this year from April 17 and October 29. It’s kind of confusing but worth understanding because they say they are evaluating the lottery for possible use with other campgrounds https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/lottery-pilot.htmby gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Unfortunately another person is killed by a falling tree in Yosemite Valley. The tunnel view shows maybe 50% of the pine trees are dead or dying from the bark beetles. Since this is a National Park and not a wilderness area the park service should be looking at a plan to improve this situation. Dangerous trees could be removed and new native seedlings planted. Trees were cut to return the tunnelby gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
What's with the icicles hanging down in front of the Sentinel Dome web cam? I have never noticed them before. Did they put a cover over the camera or put it in a box?by gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I hope the government is not using my money for this study. I can tell if bears are eating human food by checking their poop for food wrappers.by gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Here is a link from the Yosemite on-line library that shows a partial map of the Mariposa Grove from 1923. (Illustration #88) It's hard to read but many of the state named trees were surrounding the Big Trees Lodge. Of course the lodge is gone now but I believe the current parking lot is near the location of the old lodge. http://www.yosemite.ca.us/library/yosemite_resources/mather_years.htmby gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Good to hear from the other Yosemite Nuts. I have visited almost every year since 1967 ( saw the firefall once). I worked as a volunteer with the Yosemite Association (now Yosemite Conservancy) several times, and have a bookshelf full of Yosemite history books, Ansel Adams books, and John Muir Books (My Yosemite license plate is JHNMUIR. Hard to explain - I just feel different when I'm there! Wheby gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
You are assuming that the Tioga road will be open. It should open sometime in mid or late June.Snow packs have been 200% of normal. Keep checking the Yosemite road plowing reports. Definitely visit the Bodie ghost town and the Mono Lake tufa areas. You can even canoe or kayak on Mono Lake. Also, mountain bike riding at Mammoth is fun and skiing may still be going on. Most of the FCFS campgrounds are along the Tioga road which will be closed June 7th. A guess of when the Tioga road would open is the end of June but there are too many unknowns to realy know when it will be open and then the campgrounds open later. Also, many of these campgrounds will not take a large RV. Your best option is to get lucky and get a last minute valley campground cancellation orby gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Sounds like the Glacier Point road MIGHT be open for Memorial weekend barring no additional snow, completion of road repair, and clearing the road of fallen trees & rocks. I can have some hope for it being open when I'm there June 4th.by gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
When the river campgrounds were open in the valley, one was for tents only, and one was for RVs which worked out great. Since they took them out due to flooding tent campers are mixed in with the RVs There was a plan to improve the valley campsites by building new bathrooms, more separation between sites (therefore fewer sites) and electricity at the sites. Altho ths could encourage more RVs itby gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Most likely there will only be a small stream of water going over Yosemite Falls, even with all the snow we had this year. However, Vernal & Nevada Falls should have a reasonable amount. With the lessened amount of water in the Merced River there are nice reflections of the Valley in the river and of course less crowds so it's still enjoyable.by gtbhiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
