Well, this has been fun, but ummm... This has been completely been blown out of preportion and I want to thank you all. I've bathed in a Kern river many times, back in the day. River or no river, it doesn't make money grow on trees.. I agree, I don't mind paying the admission fee etc., my point was that it (being the shower)is another fee that wasn't there 5 years ago. I agree- I have to say the shower houses are pretty gross. I know Mammoth is pretty pricey too and it had even less amenities . Last year, I payed the store/boat house 3-4 bucks (depending on which place) for a hot shower. Despite my handle ("Red Lipstick"-punn), I can go without a shower, but for the price of park admission and my campground reservation (and not say, tax dollaby Red Lipstick - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks for the replies, guys. Yeah, They've charged me before, that was back when it was $4.00 bucks...reguardless of the towels my son and I already had. Hopefully they do allow people with their own supplies...something tells me it depends on who's on duty at that time. I don't understand thier rational...they get their money either way. Okay, so long gone are the no pay showers, which is lame. So, I was wondering can you still avoid paying, when you show up at the shower house, after 10:00 p.m.? I think it's rediculous to make tent campers pay an additional $4.00 bucks (is it up to $5 now...meh), on top of everything else, but I digress. Thanksfully you got him out of there before he stripped the inside...Thanks for posting this, it will definitely make my triple check my car, like others have stated. Yeah, I can't say I've seen the Mist Trail as busy as those photos either. I went in July (the weekend following the 4th, I believe), some years back, and I can't say it was that bad. They had whole segment on one of the entetainment shows (like Entertainment tonight type of thing) and the very same thing. Well, I'd have to say when I was 26...I was a late bloomer and only had my drivers licence 3 months, and decided I would drive my son and I to Yosemite. It was such a free feeling, considering I had to wait soooo long to drive. It was mine, and my son's, second time being up there, only my husband stayed behind, this trip. This is truely heart wrenching. I was saying, in another post, about my son doing this....scares the crap out of me..the whole trail, dry or wet. I am going to be sure to make my son aware of this story.by Red Lipstick - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the advice, Plawrence. I will keep those things in mind, especially the gloves. I've wondered about what kind to get. I feel like a baby, but it trips me out, that people(not typical hikers) wake up one morning and decide to do Half Dome, like it's no big deal. I am pretty lean and fit, but definately not prepped for that hike. I look at it like a marathon training, I don't take itby Red Lipstick - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Plawrence, I would do that, but I think my son would protest it and I know my husband would, because of the climb. My only concern is packing enough water, I need a purifier. I have a weak back and know it sounds like excuses, but it controls a lot of what I will and will not do. I hike 3 Xs a week (local hills/mountains in Southern Cali), but nothing too crazy. Personally, I loved the Panorama Trail. I shuttled to the top of Glacier Point (about $15-$20 bucks a person, at the time) and hiked down. My knees hated comming down the John Muir (the last stretch of the Panorama meets Muir Trail), however. The switchbacks downward are killer, but still a beautiful hike and for the most part, an "easy" hike. My son was about 7-years-old, at the tby Red Lipstick - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'd be careful taking a ton of vitamins, they can do more harm, than good. I was never bothered by mosquitos until my Mammoth camping trip, of last year. INteresting and slightly off subject (and not really the point), but the media keeps stating the falls at 317 feet, while my J.P. Schaffer hikes book states 320. I have to agree. I found it pretty tragic. People get caught up in their emotions and make poor spilt-second decisions. My son likes to try and run ahead of me, going down the Mist Trail (he was about 12 or 13 back then). I use the Garmin and it's pretty self explanatory. I learned by just sitting in the car and messing around it, since I hate directions. It has it's faults, but I consider it a lifesaver, while getting through Los Angeles, for work. I doubt the satellite system could get you through California SR roads, however.
