We just came back from a trip between Tuolumne Meadows and Waterwheel Falls (on the trail last Thursday to Saturday). The trail to Glen Aulin is very passable with 2 creek crossings requiring either going through the water or log / rock hopping. Past Glen Aulin, there's a section of trail maybe 200 yards long that is underwater and difficult to pass with dry feet. I believe it was just upstreby JFK1965 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We were able to get sites for all but one of the nights on the front end of our backpack. Thanks to you and "Sewolpe" for the heads up! On a related question - I apologize if this has been covered earlier but I don't see it. We'll be arriving on a Sunday, so I imagine a fair number of people will be leaving. I apologize if this has been covered on here somewhere in years past, but I couldn't find it. Tuolumne Meadows campground shows on recreation.gov as opening on July 10, and so for arrivals before that no reservations were available during the last onsale window this past week. Given the very light snowpack so far this year (and assuming that persists) would that date potentially move earlier inby JFK1965 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm in LYV now. Monday night my son an I lay in our tent in Upper Pines reading Death in Yosemite and marveling at how people disregard warnings. We hit Happy Isles about 12:30 to head up here to meet our main group hiking over from Tuolumne. There was a ranger asking if anyone had witnessed what happened. Per the recorded daily campground status line, Crane Flat opens today (7/8) at 10:30. Hopefully a precursor to Tuolumne opening next week?by JFK1965 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I spoke to someone in the Yosemite Valley campground office yesterday. They said that while there's nothing official, the talk around the office was that it would open on the 15th.by JFK1965 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm helping to organize a backpack trip with Boy Scouts and some of their dads. I'd love any input as to its viability based on likely trail conditions. Here is our tentative plan: July 15-16: Camp in Tuolumne Meadows campground (assuming it opens by then) to prepare and acclimatize. July 17: Cathedral Lakes TH to Sunrise HSC (which I understand is closed for business but I assume we can stby JFK1965 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Our group had a few "meals only" tickets at the Sunrise HSC for July 17th. (This was to supplement the number of Wilderness Permits we had for the same date as the HSC meal tickets come with a Wilderness Permit). We got a call today informing us that the HSC would not be opening until August due to the snow conditions. They're refunding our money but will still be providing the Wildeby JFK1965 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
This looks to be the same point without the snow. The signpost is relatively level with the road - looks to be quite a load of snow . . . maybe 3 - 4 feet? http://maps.google.com/maps?q=tuolumne+meadows&ie=UTF8&hl=en&hq=&hnear=Tuolumne+Meadows&ll=37.87345,-119.385509&spn=0,0.003473&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=37.873432,-119.385396&panoid=84ZTPkjUJRk9GFezyby JFK1965 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I've done that same route over 2 days, and we're doing a very similar one again this summer, but starting from Cathedral Lakes trailhead instead of Tenaya Lake. Actually some family are flying out from Chicago to join us! We're breaking it into MUCH smaller days though - 6-9 miles per day. Bottom line - I have to agree that you're potentially being over-ambitious. You'll be coming from the lowby JFK1965 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We have a reservation in the Valley (Upper Pines) for a week in mid-July. During that time we may try to do a 3-day backpack and thus we'd be away from the campsite for a few days. (We already have our wilderness permit). Our ability to be able to do the backpack is up in the air for reasons I won't bore you with, but if we are able to move forward with the backpack trip can we cancel some dayby JFK1965 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
