McClintock will fix this, right? Yosemite's in his district. Or, maybe he'll just push to privatize the park service, or the park outright, right?by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Stick with Chick-on's advice. There's a ton of water up there right now. I just got done with a trip on Friday where I went over Vogelsang Pass and out Clouds Rest. Was never thirsty. Have fun!by KC - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Everyone, thanks for the advice. There was plenty of water everywhere. I was surprised by how much I saw since it's pretty dry up in the Tahoe vicinity. Spent three nights out and went from Tuolumne Meadows over Vogelsang Pass to Merced Lake, then took the High Trail to Cloud's Rest and out Tenaya Lake. Driest area was near the burn area before the JMT/Forsyth junction, but that was only forby KC - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Does anyone know what the water conditions are like on the way from Sunrise Lakes to Clouds Rest? Got a trip planned for August and am wondering. Will there be water in the creek after the sunrise lakes junction? Thanx.by KC - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Awesome! Wish I could get there more than a couple times a year. This leads me to ask, what is your favorite spot in Yosemite? Or, maybe, the best adventure you've had there?by KC - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Congress could likely fix this problem easily, but I suspect Yosemite's biggest advocate, my fine Congressman, who has the park in his district, would not want the heavy hand of government impeding the ability of "small business" to make an honest buck. I'm in your boat. Typically, I head toward the coast, do trips like Pt. Reyes, Ohlone, and Henry Coe. I am thinking about snowshoeing this winter and trying to head to Sierras too.by KC - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

This sort of goes along with all the other advice, but if you know you really want to start backpacking, get a lightweight down bag. It'll be expensive, but it'll save you a later purchase. Plus, you can use it for car camping too. Watch for sales though. You can find a Marmot Helium, for example, on sale online sometimes for substantially less than the standard retail price. Just got around to hiking Mt. Tallac in Desolation. Definitely the Half Dome hike of the Tahoe region, except it features dogs in addition to people. While the wilderness aspect of the hike suffers, I am glad that the opportunity exists for people touch it a little. The Glacier Point dump is probably treated as if it were eligible for the register anyway. Cabins a good question, but perhaps it's had more recent modifications. Tough to say.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
You'll see some hunters for sure. Just did Sierra Buttes and saw some hunters on the way down. If u are on 4, it's also worth checking out Highland Lakes. Tryon Peak is close to the lakes and definitely worth climbing. 108 is great too but sadly I have yet to get to Leavitt.by KC - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Depends on how big a hike u wanna do. Saddle between Bull Run and Henry Peak is a nice and short 6 mile round tripper from Pacific Valley, highway 4. Just a ton of stuff out there. If you can, the 4-108 loop drive is worth doing.by KC - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
If u make it back, a lesser traveled path is to go up Mission Peak and to continue following the Bay Ridge Trail to Allison and Monument peaks down to Ed Levin Park. Great hike.by KC - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I did an overnighter there several years ago and have been meaning to make it back. The "Big Burn" is what I've heard people call that portion of the hike where u gain the ridge only to drop all the way back down, just to go up again. Desolation Wilderness. Been exploring the northern half lately. Beautiful and there aren't any crowds. Will see people if u go outta Echo Lakes where the ferry is or Emerald Bay, but going in out of Loon Lake, Sugar Pine Pt. The 50 year thing coincides with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Under the law, something has to be at least 50 years of age, meet one of four criteria, and have integrity for it to be considered 'historic'--eligible for the National Register. So not everything 50 years of age is historic necessarily, a lot if stuff is just old. However, the 50 years thing is a useful mby KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
