while staying in the valley a few junes ago, I noticed that tenaya creek level peaked around 1am (almost flooding our tent-site). it made sense to me at the time that it coincided with the warmest point of the day (early afternoon) -- taking roughly 12hrs to reach the valley. thanks so much. I can tell that you took the time to lay out your map, snap a photo, and post it here in response -- that's what I love about this forum -- people sharing their passion for the sierra Nevada! I'm thinking about taking my family on this loop. my son (21) and I have done a couple week-long loops in Yosemite over the last several years and I am now trying to arrange sharing thby mtc - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
hey all, quick/easy question: what's the mileage on the loop out of twin lakes - matterhorn canyon - Rodgers lake - Rancheria creek - back to twin lakes? I've been so inspired by posts on the subject area. thanks, mtcby mtc - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
when in a region that has predominantly "clear" water sources, the steripen is the way to go -- roughly 4 oz w/battery. I like to use a 1 liter platy with the top cut off to scoop water and treat with the steripen -- then pour into my smart water water bottle. In the Midwest or even Appalachians, I would go with an msr mini-works -- a maintainable filter unit.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I know this is not real hard core but, as i'd mentioned earlier, it would "get the feet wet" (getting some diversification) and allow you to gain experience/confidence for a follow-up trip. personally, I enjoy a touch of the madness/contrast offered by the valley to "season" the experience. last year we did a Saturday-to-Saturday -- starting at backpackers campground andby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. a couple years ago, my boy and I did 3 nights starting up rockslides, camping just west of el cap on night one (not sure where exactly -- kinda got lost due to snow covered trails). day two had us over el cap, yose falls and lost arrow spire -- spending night two on north dome. day three had us on/around indian rock and a nice long afternoon/evening atop snow creek - overlooking half dome. we mby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. sorry, this being your first real backpacking trip to Yosemite.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
This being your first trip to Yosemite, I would recommend a north rim loop starting up Yosemite Falls and coming down Snow Creek. This would be a comfortable two days and also allow you some time in the (gasp!) valley. I would recommend night one on North Dome and night two atop Snow Creek -- both with awesome views of Half Dome and the Valley. This trip would allow you to get your feet wet (lby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
thanks chick, thanks to all for input. planning on going up budd ck to budd lake, west over the saddle on south side of cath pk and down to upper cath lake. from there, up the ridge to 10450 and over to tenaya pk/mildred lake. that will be the extent of our bushwacking -- the rest of the week will be on trail. how were the muskitos last week?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. thanks guys, i guess i should consult a proper map (showing 'no camping zones') when i awake from my 'dreams' -- my bad. however, is the route still a good one?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
i have a dream...... well, a plan anyway -- i understand that there's a trail from the JMT/120 up the Budd Lake outlet/creek from tm to said lake? considering camping at budd lake. i then plan on humping over the saddle on the south side of cath peak to upper cath lake -- doable/nice or not? -- i'm really just looking for ways to do some cross country (and avoid the masses) around tm/cath lakesby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. #5 cheesy spoon syndrome!!!! -- lol !!!! i was going to mention that above but was too embarassed -- i thought i was the only one who had that problem -- the boy and i spent way too much time last year after our mountain house cheesed meals trying to scrape the thick coating from our ti spoons -- stuff's like automobile undercoating, it is. so next month, i'm not packing any lasagnas or spaghetby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. hey bigr, if you're really packing a bearvault 5000, you won't have trouble fitting your food howver, if you only have a bearvault 500, you may be challenged to get 4 days of food for 3 adults in there. my 18yr old boy and i need every cubic inch of our bv450 and bv500 for 5 days. we used freeze dried breakfasts/dinners exclusively with clif bars for snacks/lunches -- one thing that helps is rby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. in an effort to save weight, i use an old 1L platy with the top cut off as a "scoop" to gather water and then stir with the pen before pouring into my "goodwater" platys. you know, those 1L rigid nalgene bottles weigh over 6 oz!!!!! while a 2L "soft" platy or evernew weighs under 2oz ---- that's twice the capacity and a 1/4 pound savings!!! i'm just sayin'....by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. we used the steripen opti last year on our north rim/hd trip. absolutely loved it's size, weight and simplicity. prolly wouldn't use it around the siltier/muckier watersheds here in the midwest, but in the sierras, it was perfect. 2 people for 3-4 days did require two sets of batteries however -- ymmv.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. my first sierra backpacking trip was last june. got lots of advice from the good folks on this site. my son and i started up old big oak flat trail, with the intention of going all the way to tenaya, across clouds rest, half dome and back down to happy isle. however, with flight delays and the remaining snow cover, we ended up shortening the loop - coming back down snow creek 3 nights later.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. i'm guessing you were referring to the two bridges directly above bunnell cascades? i apologize for inquiring about such a popularly mundane part of the beautiful sierras, but you must realize i'm a midwesterner who made his first yosemite backcountry trip last year (north rim and halfdome) ..... and have been obsessively smitten ever since.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
