I saw the website but hadn't seen the video. Thanks! Yes, looks like there is a lot more work to do and even if they get the road open, hiking will be a bit challenging!by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi- Got wilderness permits for July 2nd leaving TM/Budd Creek. Any update on Tioga Road? And even if the road is open, is there still several feet of snow on the trails? thanks, Markby theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Any word on when the cables will be up?by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I would expect an early opening this year. Can't wait to get down to GCT.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Nice pics. Was trying to figure it out from the news story, your picture shows it all. Glad no one was hurt.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The fire may burn until it rains. Seriously. It isn't going to run away at this point, and no more structures are threatened. So it is almost a big controlled burn now.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Nice post. Seems like there was a good opportunity to hold the line between Hetch Hatchey and the other lakes, but guess that was too much. Looks like it is going to be torched all the way up to Lake Vernon.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Looking at http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/fires/2013_rim_fire_map.html, looks like Laurel Lake is going to get torched today. Very bummed.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks! Sometimes these creeks disappear in late summer, just wanted to check. This is much better than getting too much before Clouds Rest.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm usually backpacking in the springtime, but I'm taking my brother next weekend and we'll be heading over the top of Clouds Rest and then to Half Dome. Is there any water sources this time of year between the two? Don't want to lug a bunch of water over Clouds Rest if it isn't needed. Thanks in advance...by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Chick-On Thanks for the detailed pics. I took some myself this weekend. After some last minute research (and which follows your question), I couldn't figure out how to cross the river without going all the way to Pate Valley, which defeats the purpose of a short cut. So we did the GCT as normal and took similar photos that you posted. Looks challenging for a "backpacking-non-technical-cliby theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the responses. I'm going up Wednesday, and I think I'm going to give it a try. Getting a crazy detailed elevation map to help pick the sanest route. If we live, I'll post some info on the route we took :-)by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
BTW, I've done GCT several times, want to find a different way down rather than White Wolf.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Has anyone down this trip? I know there is no official trail, but heard this was possible. If you've done it and have any tips, please let me know. Thanks.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
She's not going to get very far with the lawsuit. Has there ever been a successful ride over Vernal Falls?by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Death in Yosemite is a great read and after reading it, news like these 3 don't surprise me. And you have to know that you can't save someone once they've gone to close too far into the river near the falls. It's a shame. The rule of thumb that I always learned was that if a river is moving faster than you can walk next to it, then it is too fast to be swimming in.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I was originally planning on doing Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne this weekend, but from what I'm hearing there is still snow up in Tuolumne Meadows and probably a lot of hairy river crossings. So looking for a Plan B and wonder if anyone was up this past weekend? Anyone know the status of Rancheria Falls and Lake Vernon trails? Any other suggestions?by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Very nice!!! Can't wait til Thursday!by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Regardless of the name, this is a great stretch of waterfalls in the springtime. Wanted to go there this weekend, but I have a feeling there will be a bit too much snow :-)by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks, will be up this route this weekend...by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Good news. So now that I can get to Tuolumne Meadows on Thursday the 23rd, do I still try GCT? :-)by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Nice photos! Thanks! Done GCT 3 times, hope we can get to Tuolumne Meadows to start next Thursday!by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the update. BTW, this is post #1 for me, nice to join a place with similar interests. I guess I finally have to reconsider my Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne trip on Thursday the 23rd :-) Even if the road does open, I'd have to assume there's going to be a few hairy places along the river. Down around Pate, a few years ago, I was up to my waist, probably not the smartest thing I ever did.by theBigLip - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
