Sitting on my deck in Wisconsin, living vicariously through these trip reports! Stunningly beautiful pics. Thanks!!by ScottS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thank you all for the excellent information in this thread. I love these historical topics. And Chick-on, your maps are fantastic. Thanks so much for all of the work you put into them. History and maps are my two favorite topics! (And that last overlay map certainly has much to contemplate!) I'm going to be in the Valley this weekend, and I plan on taking some time to poke around these locaby ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So I'm going to be in the Valley at the end of March, staying in Curry Village. I've never been to the world famous pizza deck. Is it even open then?? Or do I have to suffer horrific disappointment. Mercy.by ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We stayed at the Cedar Lodge for our one trip to Yosemite in June of 2011.It's not luxurious, but we found it very convenient. And they have a bar, which is a plus I'd definitely stay there again if we ever go back (we live in Wisconsin). If it were just me, I'd backpack and camp in the park; but the missus likes to have a bed and indoor plumbing every night So we used the Cedar Lodge as a bby ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I voted for Sentinel Dome because it's easy to get to and the view is fantastic. My caveat is that I've only been to Yosemite once and didn't have time to get to all of the places on the list. One of the best spots we did see was the Oh-My-Gosh lookout on the Upper Yose trail. Probably a bit of a hoof if you're not generally inclined to trail hikes. Another really neat spot we went to was Wauwonaby ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

My wife and I came to Yosemite for the first time this past June, so it’s all still very fresh (and a bit overwhelming). But like many of you, it’s that first glimpse of the Valley that just takes your breath away. I did lots of research (including reading this forum a lot) before we went, so I’d seen photos of most of the major views/landmarks, etc. But as you all know, photos truly doby ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Conditions will greatly determine my water consumption. More is better than less, though, for me. As for a filter, I took a Katadyn Hiker Pro to Yosemite last month and it worked like a champ. Easy to use, compact and not too heavy. And it works quickly.by ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I don't have a lot of new information to add, but I'll give you my observations. My wife and I made our first trip to Yosemite in June, so it all was new to us. We did this hike two days after hiking the Half Dome trail (to about half way up sub dome, but that's a topic for a different thread..), and didn't have too much trouble. We're 51 and 45, and in decent shape. But we live in Wisconsin, soby ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We were at the top of Upper Yosemite Fall last month, and a young guy was standing out on the rock, on the other side of the railing at the viewing point. Nobody really said anything to him other than it looked scary to be out by the edge. I didn't see him go over the railing, he was just all of a sudden out there. I have to admit that even though I was stunned by this amount of stupidity, I didnby ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
For what it's worth, my wife and I went on a ranger-led hike from Glacier Point a couple of weeks ago on our first day in the park. He was a veteran--had been a ranger since the mid-70's. He said that whenever he comes across a bear jam in the park, he chases the bear off. He said invariable the people stopped will ask him why in the world he did that; and he tells them, "because you're blocby ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the photos, eeek--I think that makes a pretty good case for staying away from that zone! Anvanho--We live in Madison and I have enjoyed the amenities in the booming metropolis of Belleville from time to time over the years I'd recommend the Boundary Waters to anyone here. My wife and I will be arriving on Saturday afternoon for our first visit to the park (we're coming from Wisconsin--go Pack!). I've been lurking on the site for a while and have picked up some outstanding tips from all of you! We'll be day-hiking, mainly because I haven't quite gotten the missus too fired up for wilderness camping yet (I do quite a bit of it myself in the Boundary Waters), althby ScottS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
