A Sierra Club hike leader from Groveland is leading a day hike to Cloud's Rest in a few weeks, 14 miles, and he is going to be 80 in October. He is a constant inspiration to me.by eat.sleep.hike - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I just finished reading this article after a backpack trip where several of the people were drinking right out of the very fast-flowing Tuolumne River w/o treating it, and after talking to a backcountry ranger who said he doesn't treat the water. I also once met a scientist who was sampling the water up toward Young Lakes and he said that they rarely find giardia in the water in Yosemite. Two that really stick with me are: 1. A man was urging his child, about 4 yrs old, to get closer and closer (like a few feet away) to deer that were grazing at Yosemite Lodge so he could get a better picture. I could tell he was a foreign tourist and didn't have a clue about deer not all being Bambi but I finally got so nervous that I tried to tell him what he was doing was dangerous. Quotembear I really can't wait to see her report that she's going to release Friday. It should be great comedy to read how it's not the fault of the people who decided ignore a huge sign and then climb a fence so that they could walk into a raging river just above a 300 foot fall. So well put! I understand that this family is going through the stages of grief, but they are really making it haby eat.sleep.hike - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteplawrence The men were in their 50's and familiar with Yosemite. Yes, I saw that today. Thanks for the correction. One of the accounts I read before their identities were released had the ages wrong.by eat.sleep.hike - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotewherever What the lady actually said was probably more respectful and more accurate than what ended up in the paper. She almost certainly knew that it was a lot more than a few miles by alternate trails. The 'few' word may have been just the reporter's understanding.... Quoterightstar76 Time for a lawsuit. The trail should have been closed. Or at least a sign put up saying to wait until 10 am when there was less water flowing. They only had 2.5 miles left to the parking lot. The alternative route would have taken days and there would have been water crossings there as well. The NPS is trying to shift the blame to these men so they can get out of this. I don'tby eat.sleep.hike - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am so sorry to hear this. I did an overnighter to Rancheria Falls 2 weeks ago and I thought the falls were crazy big then. Crossing that bridge was a bit scary at the west end where there was water flowing over it and so much falling on it that you could not see through to the trail beyond. It must have gotten even worse than that. I actually thought then that we should have been warned wheby eat.sleep.hike - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
On June 16 the trail to Rancheria Falls had A LOT of water flowing over it at Tueeulala Falls, up to your knees and obscuring the rocky trail beneath for a short way. Wapama Falls is flowing over the bridge at the west(?) end. After that it is clear. There is a Mama bear and 2 cubs foraging between the tunnel and Wapama Falls and I saw 2 gopher snakes and a mountain king snake right on the traiby eat.sleep.hike - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
