I think most of us have seen Vernal, maybe even recently with the very high water. Here is a video someone shot just a few weeks ago. A good look and reminder of how crazy this is. http://youtu.be/fQpHGO9CQf0by ab2ski - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The young woman slipped and fell in first, the two men fell in trying to save her. They were all urged to move away from the water. At least that is what I heard in a news story. But who knows whats right, other than what the outcome is. Bottom line, don't "F" with the falls. Or ledges, edges...etc. It's hard to explain to youths, and I can only thank that I made it though the multipleby ab2ski - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yeah, I wasn't sure about Taft. I knew you could at Dewy, Stanford...etc. I am guessing that because all those are West of Bridal, that is why. Thanks for the heads up. Still solo. Any takers?by ab2ski - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I don't, but there was plenty of availability when I spoke to the ranger the other day and he doubted it would be an issue. The park is crowded, but this trail is not. Most people to go there unless they are in a car headed to Sentinal or Glacier, or taking the bus up to Glacier and then they head into valley or back toward Wowona.by ab2ski - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I am looking to see if anyone is interested in doing a 3-day hike from the Wowona tunnel (or Bridal Veil lot), up the Pohono Trail and camping night one maybe Taft Point area. Second day head down somewhere into the illilouette falls basin area. Then head down to the valley on the last day, lunch and a beer, then out of the park. I am looking at Friday-Sunday July 15-17. We were there that night and I posted on here July 1 night to see if anyone had heard about the fall.... I just returned from a few days at Curry and last night (night of June 30/July 1), at 2:54 am, there was a HUGE crack (almost explosion like) followed by about 30 seconds of loud rumble of tumbling boulders that finally faded. It sounded like it came from the Glacier Point area. We nervouslby ab2ski - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
yeah, it was pretty crazy. It made me think a lot about those who talk about hearing a tornado, and how it sounds like a freight train crashing through your house (even if it doesn't), and how they will never forget the sound. It was very clear, loud, and put you in that place where your senses are heightened and you are almost primal suddenly....listening and sensing the sounds and air around yoby ab2ski - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteszalkowski A couple additional comments about encountering stock animals: When you stop to let them pass, (1) step a reasonable distance off of the trail (I like to give them 10 ft. clearance if possible) but remain where the animals can see you, (2) remain still and quiet (I don't take any photos if they are within 50 ft., both before and after they pass), and (3) follow any instructions gby ab2ski - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. RE: Trail etiquette, I just took my very "green" mother, sister and her husband and their daughter, to Yosemite. In preparing them for hiking the trail, I told them about trail etiquette and to always (1) yield to uphill hikers and (2) backpackers and/or stock always have the right of way unless your position puts you in such an aspect as to where you must proceed first. I am aware they are fairly common, but from the size of this sound (this one was certainly not thunder), it just sounded big! I have heard thunder plenty, and do a lot of backpacking so have heard my share. I had never heard this, however, but knew immediately what it was.
