Thanks, David. I appreciate the kind words. Yup, I knew this would be one of those only chances for awhile, and was lucky to have a break in my schedule. I met one guy in Cooks Meadow that morning that had hiked up the 4-mile trail the previous day right in the midst of the storm, hanging out for almost 5 hours at Glacier Pt waiting for a break in the clouds, which he said he was lucky enoughby enlightphoto - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Turns out I had a slight twist of irony after posting my entirely fictional account of shooting at Tunnel View as part of a group April Fools Day joke post, when exactly a week later I was really at Tunnel View, and surprise, surprise... guess what I got? Quotebalzaccom We haven't done the Diving Board, but we feel the same way about Cloud's Rest. Higher than Half Dome, fewer people, and much better views. Diving Board is next on my to-do list as well. Quoteeeek QuoteplawrenceI bet some of them surely do. I hope the squirrels and other small rodents that hang around Yosemite Village, Curry Village and Glacier Point still remember how to forage for their traditional food instead of relying on handouts from park visitors. Actually I wouldn't be too surprised about seeing a bear on a night hike through Little Yosemite. I've come across a few on night hikes. You can't confuse those widely-separated green eyes staring at you when caught in the beams of your headlamp. Usually a few bangs on the hiking poles and a couple "Shoo-Bear!" shouts gets them moving. If you see one, stay still until they've moved offby enlightphoto - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. David: Thanks for the explanation. You are a better GE user. For some reason, I don't get any names popping up, nor all those marks near CR. I'm not very technical, so that might explain it. Also, wouldn't have figured one of the Banner / Ritter Peaks to be hidden from that angle. I guess I'm too used to seeing them in such relative proximity to each other as mirroring the above image. Thanks David: Your answer presupposes I didn't try with GE, which I did. The relief was not detailed enough to determine with editorial caption accuracy. As for the straight edge, I tried that too. QuoteOhnivy-Drak QuoteParis92 Great report and pics. How long does this hike typically take? I want to do it next summer. Leave from Sunrise trailhead the best way? typically yes, although you will see a decent % coming up from the Half Dome side. It takes about 3 to 3.5 hours to reach the summit. Very nice; glad you had a snow free adventure. I wanted to do CR earlier in the week. I called the Tuolumne Wilderness Office on Sunday of the previous week. (after the storm) I was told the ranger had to turn around due to snow and ice. On Tuesday, I decided on Upper Cathedral Lake, and still, 6 out of the 8 miles RT were across a snow covered trail. I was toying with the idea of trying to hike to Clouds Rest early this week, but ranger says trail is still 100% snow travel w/ ice likely on summit. Not especially feeling like cranking through 1000' of switchbacks in snow, I'm considering a day hike to Upper Cathedral Lake as an easier alternative.
