Hey David, Yes, I agree with you and whatever, the contour lines are too weak when zoomed in. I've just updated the map to have stronger contour lines and more contrast overall at the two most zoomed in levels, it's much better. While climbing Vogelsang last weekend I was thinking about the vegetation cover for off trail hiking and how it should be styled. Hey Klas, I was up on the East Ridge yesterday and got stopped by this knife edge at the first bump. Did you go across this or is there a different way? Not having ice axes we ended up finding an easy route up the right side of the East Face. Definitely a lot of snow melt in the last couple of weeks. Quotewherever Well, contrast is certainly part of it. The overall picture looks gray because much of the dynamic range is wasted. It's as if a 50% gray overlay is on top of everything. Quotettilley Darkening the contour lines makes sense - the area I mentioned near Dog Lake appears to blend into the combination of forested green and the 3D shading. I was intentionally going low contrast. Theby sayornis - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotecmon4day Is there a legend for this map? I would like to know what the various shades represent. I haven't made a legend but I can point you to a wiki page on GitHub that explains the landcover data for Yosemite (it's slightly different outside the park). plawrence, wherever, cmon4day -- I'm glad you like the map and hope you find it useful. wherever -- can you be a bit more specific about the contrast? Where do you find it lacking? When zoomed in/out? All the time? For example, in this example: I can definitely see the need for increased contrast. In particular, the contour lines get washed out, especially in the dark green area E of thby sayornis - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hey folks, I've updated the landing page of closedcontour.com to a new map of Yosemite that I've been working on. This map is easily modifiable and I'd like it to incorporate anything that might be useful to Yosemite visitors, so please send any comments, corrections, or changes to dan at closedcontour.com, or even better, file an issue on the GitHub project page. Some other things that would be really great: - Obviously more meadow names and ridge names would be cool - Correct trail alignment - Additional missing dome and peak names - Park and wilderness boundaries - TH outside the park with names Some places real quick that the trail has moved are: - approach to Crescent Lakeby sayornis - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Hey Chick-on, I regenerated tiles for Yosemite at the two most zoomed in levels with your additions. I filtered out the valleys, meadows, and falls because they don't currently fit into any styles that I currently have. And, strangely enough, I forgot to add Billy Dome. So you should now be able to search for all your domes and see them on the map. Beware that due to Amazon's caching it's possby sayornis - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotettilley He didn't mark Billy Dome on the map but he did make it searchable, its there and works. The 'M' works in Firefox (at least on the Mac), w/ a catch. Once the "Search" box is selected there's no way to unselect it other than reloading the page. As long as Search isn't highlighted M will work, otherwise it goes into the Search box until the page is reloaded. Same with Safaby sayornis - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotechick-on That would be cool. For the slow people... can you give me Half Dome as WGS84 as an example and I'll go from there? Alrighty Chick-on, I added a feature so you (or others!) can start tagging the domes. Now when you hit the 'M' key (think "Mark" the current position of the mouse will be saved in the upper left corner. Quotechick-on Perhaps we can convince closedcontour.com guy to add the dome names and what to his maps. He has a search feature for the SPS peaks... maybe he can also add other things to the search feature. Having all the lesser known domes on his map would be a really cool feature. You send me a list of names and WGS84 coordinates in some easy format and I'll add them. I don't want to add eby sayornis - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi Chris, I climbed Gray Peak a couple of Saturdays ago. Here's a shot from the near the summit towards Red Peak. I don't think you can see Red Peak Pass proper, but you can get a feel for the north-facing slopes in that area. Hi, I've found this site to be a great resource while lurking over the last few years and the recent thread about Gmap4 made me want to get off my butt and introduce myself. In my no longer so copious spare time I've created my own online topographic map of the Sierra Nevada (specifically focused on the peaks of the Sierra Peaks Section peak list) which, of course, includes Yosemite.
