Some people are just really bad at picking up on subtle social queues. I think hiking is similar to any other potentially social environment. A "Hello" is always polite. Sometimes a 5 minute conversation can be very rewarding. When two people's moods line up an extended hang out can also be great. However, its not usually difficult to determine if you've overstayed your welcome and assuby Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I agree and I'll extend that to blue skies as well. Pure blue w/o clouds = less interesting pictures.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the tips everyone. Our group of eight hiked up to Vogelsang on Friday (rain gear at the ready) and hiked out on Sunday. We had distant thunder and a sprinkle or two on the way in but nothing major. Saturday was a beautiful morning that turned into a cloudy afternoon, rainy evening (hard for a bit) and clear night. Sunday ended up with pleasant hiking temps and some rain on the wayby Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Maybe you can help flesh out this forecast for me? I normally agree with you Plawrence. However the tension in the music works for me here as this vid feels like it's saying something other than " look at this beautiful place". Reminds me of Baraka.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yep, very cool. It's stressful but I love the people scrambling on granite. Looks like spiders to me. Also I always live time lapse clouds.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
This is not my video and I don't know these folks. I stumbled across it while bushwhacking through internet forums Anyway, I loved it and figured I'd share: http://vimeo.com/17833750by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I have the same site preference as you. This trip is actually a group of 8, two of which are staying in the HSC cabins so we'll probably end up staying nearby to be part of the group. Thanks for the input.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Do you have the standard Rainbow or the Double Rainbow? I've been considering the Double Rainbow as an option to Lunar Duo. Both seem like great tents. Part of my leaning toward the Lunar Duo is that all TarpTent tents are on backorder for a few weeks right now.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the warning Szalkowski. I've done my research re: condensation and people generally love this shelter. It's a bit of an experiment for me. I'll sell it if it doesn't work out. This model seems to hold it's resell value well. The big draw for me is that it's larger than my Marmot Twilight2 and weighs half of what that tent does.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Yeah we'd mostly be using it for backpacking. I was concerned mostly w/rocky ground, etc. I haven't camped much in the Sierras (just yosemite a bit) and wasn't sure how often a person is forced to sleep on granite (unstakeable). Also, yep, that's the tentby Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm considering buying a SMD Lunar Duo for my GF and I but I'm a little concerned with limitations on site selection. Most of our trips will be Yosemite high country with our next outing being to Vogelsang HSC. We're also planning trips to Kings Canyon/Sequoia. Does anyone forsee site selection issues in this tent? It requires 6 stakes for a complete pitch.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm at work but I'll post some pics later. They're just cell phone pics but some of them are alright. I do have pics of sunset but we left before it got really intense. My mom was concerned with driving down in the dark with smoke on the road (in case the wind shifted). It really was an awesome view while driving through the trees though and mimicked the fire well.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I just got back from a few days in the park and wanted to pay you guys back with a brief report on weather, water, bug and smoke conditions for the time I was there. This was my third trip to the Glen Aulin High Sierra camp but my first time staying for two nights (we're usually moving from camp to camp). People frequently talk about how the cables are packed with people who "shouldn't be there". That makes some sense to me when discussing folks with known phobias, inappropriate shoes, no water, etc. However, I'd rather have those people progressing slowly and steadily from top to bottom than freezing up and having to be passed along the way. I'm sure that in some people's ideal world thby Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Unnecessary.....except for that one time when it is. I haven't done this hike but, necessary or not, how could it hurt if it sets a person at ease and allows them to enjoy themselves more? A compass is one is one of those things that's been nagging at me for a bit now. Maybe I'll snag one for this trip and figure it out as I go It's clearly not wasted weight. Thanks for the clarification and reminder Katy.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks Chick-On. The trails are pretty well defined so I was having a hard time imagining there still being enough snow to make them invisible. That post about compass skills had me wondering though. We'll be fine. I've got my DEET and Permethrin ready and my fingers crossed that the weather holds. This trip is for my mom's 60th birthday. Thanks for the links Szalkowski. The forecast is exactly what I was after. I guess I knew that valley was Glen Aulin I was more trying to differentiate it from the camp there. Thanks again. Any further info would be appreciated.by Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi there. I spotted the thread about the backcountry conditions but I'm hoping for some more up to date information if it's available. My group will be hiking from May Lake to Glen Aulin next Friday (08/05); sleeping at Glen Aulin; doing a day trip down stream into the valley there on Saturday and hiking out to tuolumne meadows on Sunday. Fitness isn't an issue and casual hiking is common fby Scogg - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
