It's good fun jumping off some of those cliffs in the foreground! In Summer, that is. The hike from there up to the top of Hoffman doesn't take long (presuming that it stays snow free) and provides incredible views (like most every high point up there). Have fun~ Quotechick-onby Eddy - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yup, that spot is beautiful any time of the year. You were right to feel a little uneasy. "like a bomb had gone off" just about covers what happens from time to time! I was there again over the holidays but admired the view from a little farther back. ; ) Cheers~ Quotebigd Glad everyone liked the pictures. Thanks, everyone. Indeed my friend and I really felt like we had been handed a new life and spent the rest of the weekend in a sort of afterglow. The whole incident gave me pause for the sort of endeavors which I enjoy. But ultimately it was such a random event, and the mountains' call wins out. I look forward to visiting "my rock" (we could see it with the naked eye clear acrossby Eddy - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Well, sometimes timing is everything. On Friday, a friend and I went up Sunnyside Bench and then up the slabs at the base of Upper Yosemite Falls to enjoy a nice lunchtime spot. We had finished lunch and were hanging out in the spray at the base when he heard that distinctive crack and looked up to see a huge block breaking off near the top of the falls. He yelled and I looked up a moment laby Eddy - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Whitney is a lot like Half Dome, in that it is such a popular destination that it is subject to a quota/permit system during most of the year...while other peaks and areas nearby are similarly scenic yet mostly devoid of visitors. That said, it makes for a memorable journey. I've spent the night on the summit and there is something special in watching the sunset and the sunrise from the 48's hiby Eddy - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yeah, heard the helicopter overhead as I scrambled up Illilouette gorge (what's up with this water level in August?!). My wife down on the valley floor was glad it wasn't for me. I hope that the recent fatal accidents remind people that, ultimately, it is about personal responsibility. Be careful out there while enjoying our wild places. .by Eddy - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
