QuoteCoolburn Or you could try Mono meadow. I'm not sure what happens in the real world when you apply for your permit but it does state on the Wilderness trailheads map that the Mono Meadows permit does not allow LYV, Sunrise Creek, or JMT camping. There are a lot of fun nuances regarding what is permissible (and not) with a Yosemite wilderness permit. Some tidbits are only revealed if you enjoy poking around in some of the small print of the NPS website. For example on the "Wilderness Trailheads" map http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/upload/wildernesstrailheads.pdf it states "Hikers may not pass through Yosemite Valby rob - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Congrats on deciding to go for it! My two cents on the Bearikade. I would not expect to fit even close to 12 days of food (plus other scented goodies) in the Expedition. I can fit about 9 tops, and I'm running about 1.5 lbs. of food per day. I know they claim up to 12 days on their website for a 900 cu canister, but they also list the weekender at 650 cu is good for 6 days. Suggesting thatby rob - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Absolutely you can do it! I'd second others opinions and strongly encourage you to go north to south for the reasons stated. The idea of carrying seven days of food to the top of Whitney sounds too brutal. From MTR heading south if you decide to resupply I'd suggest Kearsarge Pass as your best option. I ultimately decided to carry all my food without resupplying and barely fit all of my fooby rob - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I hiked from Happy Isles to Sunrise last year in late July and there was water there. A lot of folks I met on the trail, some who had just come from Sunrise HSC, were spreading the word that there was no water, Some claimed this came straight from the rangers. There was water in the creek before you got to the camp area and another spot to filter water in the camp. Since last year was exceptionby rob - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotehikerchick395 Since both of the times we did the JMT, we took 28 days...I would suggest 4 weeks. Week #1 Yosemite Valley to Reds Meadow Week #2 Reds to Bishop Pass Week #2 Bishop Pass to Kearsarge Pass Weeks 4 Kearsarge to Whitney I've section hiked to JMT using this same plan and it worked out great. I was recently in Jack Main Canyon and visited Wilma lake, which all of the signs in the backcountry call Wilmer. I talked to the ranger, and he gave me a "Yeah, I know look" but said he had no idea why this was the case. I found an explanation online and figured I'd share it with others who might be curious. This brought up another curiousity for me I hoped someone might have an aby rob - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The combination of both being on your own and no x-country experience would make me hesitate. Both my wife and I have pretty decent skills and there have been many times when having two heads to interpret the map/terrain helped. If you decide to go I would suggest using USGS 7.5 minute topos and a compass, if you know how to use it, or a GPS if thats your style. Looks like an awesome spot to camp. Where is the last water source before arriving at North Dome if you start at Porcupine Creek? I'll be camping there in a couple weeks and would appreciate any advice.by rob - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
About 2/3 up Matterhorn Canyon is accurate. We just had trekking poles and did just fine at around 4 PM on Burro pass. I would avoid early morning hours when it could be icy. We did the 1/2 mile snow covered slope down using a sideways bootsliding/careful stepping technique. I prefer to hike in lightweight convertable pants and ventilated long sleeved shirt, and a cap with a havelock, (I like the Outdoor Research sunrunner). I also use Warmers half-finger sun gloves to protect my hands from chafing from trekking pole straps. Hot weather no skeeters, roll up sleeves and zip pant legs off. Treat your clothes with permethrin and your skeeter/sun exposure is minimal,by rob - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
There are plenty of campsites at Peeler Lake. Hiking up Matterhorn Canyon north from the PCT intersection does'nt have much good campsites until you have crossed Matterhorn Creek for the last time. You are now on the west side of the creek, hike about a mile and there are some obvious campsites along the trail that have excellent views of Matterhorn peak. I backpacked over Kearsarge pass last summer and I investigated all of the bear lockers, I think there are about 4-5 and saw that there were about 6-8 stashes of food/bear atractants. Most of them were bags left behind by backpackers who did'nt want to leave any goodies to attract bears to their cars. There were at least two subsatanial packages left behind by thru-hikers. I could be wrong but my memory is there were more permits for Happy Isles to Sunset/Merced Lake (pass-through). In any event I'll count myself lucky for getting permits on the first day I faxed in my application for three out of four years! Maybe the ease that I got them with scewed my memory into into thinking there must have been more. I mentioned that you could hike out of Charlotte lake toby rob - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. It appears that the quotas for trailheads have been significantly reduced. Does anyone know whats up with that? To answer your question I think your resupply plan is a good one. Whether or not to resupply after MTR depends IMO on how much time you plan to finish your trip in. Having friends meet you around Charlotte lake would be ideal.
