It felt slightly more exposed to me than Clouds Rest, but it's not nearly as bad as it looks in the video. The wifey stayed back (she's quite acrophobic), but I didn't think twice about it. Agree with others that the hike up is worth it regardless of whether or not everyone makes it up the summit block. We camped at the west end of the lake on a granite ridge near the outlet, well away from the grassy area...kudos to balzaccom for the idea. :-) ...didn't get a single bite on my way in around 2 pm.

Awesome! I'll be doing a 3-nighter through this area in early August, except we'll be heading in via Shadow Creek to Ediza, followed by 1000 Island, and out via High Trail. I was thinking of spending 2 nights at Ediza and 1 at 1000 Island, but not sure about details or day hikes. Would you recommend doing otherwise? Thanks.

We hiked in from Cathedral Lakes trail head, camping at Cathedral Lakes and then on Clouds Rest (about 0.2 mi from summit), and hiking out via Sunrise Lakes trail head. They were virtually nonexistant on July 4th, except for a minor assault around sunset. I spent all afternoon lakeside without a bite...and no DEET. And the water is warmer than expected too...cool, but swimmable (probably around 70 deg). Lower Sunrise Lake was even warmer. Pictures coming.

Mosquitoes in late June, 2012, at Young Lakes...and we camped in dry area a good 500 ft from the water. They weren't bad at all at TM, but I think we must have hit the peak hatch at 10,000 ft. It's probably not worth entirely planning your trip around mosquitoes since they vary year to year and by elevation at any given time. Bloodsuckers waiting for us to leave the tent. Beautiful

Hey folks. I'm finally getting back to Yosemite for a short trip in early July with a Cathedral Lakes trailhead permit. I have two nights. I know it will probably be quite buggy around the lakes, so I'm hoping for camping suggestions. Don't despair. Most of this data was collected before or at least between recent storms. My guess is that the higher parts of Tuolumne drainage have gotten a few feet of snow since the measurements were taken. http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/snow/COURSES Hey, at least the skeeters will be dried out earlier this year.

Here are some maps from our Hoover trip...doesn't add a whole lot since the route was on established trails and pretty self-explanatory, but thought I'd add it anyway (may even confuse things with the color overlays). ^With the night photos, I did some post-processing in Photoshop (adjusting levels and/or contrast...still a novice here). I agree about the night photos of Tenaya...the bright snow and granite at midday are not ideal for colorful/contrasty pictures.
