Any update on containment? Was really hoping for a night hike during the Super Moon in August from Yosemite Creek Campground to the Valley Rim (possibly to Yosemite Point). I dont see any updates on the NPS website.by JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Any word on the "Dark Hole" fire? I had planned to stay at Yosemite creek campground the weekend of the 8th but see that it is currently closed. Just wondering if workers were making any progress in containing the fire and if so do you think they might open the campground after its out? Also, I read there's a few other small fires in the park according to the nps website. Do yoby JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotetanngrisnir3 QuoteJamesMac Left without checking this before. Drove down Tioga to the gate, the only areas that looked like they could have been the trailhead were closed and full of construction equipment. So we just went down to the valley. Camp 45 was a complete mad house. Apparently they didn't care about the 6 person per site limit because every site had about a dozen people in it. aby JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. It's really concerning that people still don't know better than to avoid going in the water in some parts of the park. I know this is a regular thing, but you would think after all the people who have been swept away by the currents, others would take a little more caution. I think people underestimate the power/force of that water.by JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteRBlackPhoto Yes, I know the rules. It simply wasn't (and still isn't) clear to me whether they booted Mr. Solo, or just joined his camp. And while I'm also aware that Camp 4 is open to anybody who wants to camp there, it does have a particular atmosphere because of its use primarily by climbers (which I think is one of the best things about it). Yes I meant camp 4. We didn't boot him, heby JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Greetings all!!! So I will be heading out to Yosemite late tonight/Early tomorrow morning. The plan is to get into the park before sunrise and start down a trail as the sun comes up to utilize all of the sunlight we can for the day. My question is: Is the gate closing Tioga Pass before or after the trailhead for Tuolumne grove? This is a trail I haven't done yet and I cannot recall if it isby JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks all for your helpful info. I did not know that there is now a separate permit for staying at LYV. I think my friends and I will do a midnight hike to try and reach the top of the dome by sunrise. This way hopefully we'll miss the crowds and be able to come back down to the valley floor and rest the following day.by JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Is there any "backcountry" camping you can do in this area? Or do you know of any areas just outside Yosemite? Some friends and I are hoping to do a 2-3 night backpacking trip around June 10. I have a fire permit from the USFS station and have most of my gear ready. Any suggestions are appreciated.by JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I have never been in Yosemite to experience the thunderstorms, but I have heard many stories. Obviously no one can really predict the weather, but does anyone know when a good time would be to go? I've read on a couple of the threads that there are chances of some this week, but wont be able to go until next weekend or the following. That's pretty sad. I've had many "encounters" with bears in the Yosemite area as well as in Wyoming and Alaska. Can't imagine why you would shoot it unless it was an IDLH situation.by JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteOhnivy-Drak QuoteJamesMac I recently had a trip up to Buck Meadows (on the 120 just west of Yosemite) for an annual camping trip. Not bad to go hang out and shoot some stuff, but scenery doesn't compare. Hopefully not cute bears such as Blue72? Never any animals. I always check the NPS website just for basic info. Saw that most of them don't really open until June. But I like to come on here and ask hoping people will have more personal information. I'm assuming now ite more budget controlled than weather controlled. Guess I'm stuck in the valley.by JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hoping to hit Yosemite for a 3-4 day trip some time this month. Was just wondering if any of the campgrounds up on Tioga were open. I know that there are more first-come-first-served up top compared to in the valley, and I don't really want to stay and camp 4. If anyone knows if some are open and could let me know, that would be much appreciated. The last time I stayed up top it was at Whitby JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thanks. I've arrived at the park and asked about closures before and some of the rangers just looked at me like I was asking them where Waldo was. So this is why I'm asking here. Now, are these MANDATORY closures, like we can't go at all? or are they a proceed at your own risk kind of closure? I've done Mist Trail in all conditions except snow/ice. I should be heading to the park for a quick over-night stay this coming week. I've never done the mirror lake/tenaya creek trail, so I'll probably be checking that out. I heard recently that mist trail might have closed due to bad conditions. Anyone been through there recently? If you don't mind people camping RIGHT NEXT TO YOU, its not too bad of a spot. Only 4-5 dollars per head I think. I stay there often, but the sites themselved are quite small and can have up to 6ppl(even if in different parties) in the same small site. There are a few sites in Camp 4 that do have a little space and if you position correctly you can have a little space. But it is winter time, andby JamesMac - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
