Last year the NPS started a permit system to deal with the crazy traffic generated by the hordes of photographers coming into the park during the last two weeks of February to shoot the Horsetail Fall at sunset. With President's Day weekend coming up, I was wondering if they discarded that idea or if they were going to try it again. Any official word yet?by MtSacProf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Cmon4day - Thanks for the encouragement. I'll post mine here, but Scott's blows mine clean out of the water. He had some GORGEOUS light, and our sunset clouded up right at game time. We had a bit of color in the sky, but we were hoping for something more like Scott's. I'm not sure when Scott made his trips up, but I'm guessing that photo might have been taken earlier in the Summer, but I coulby MtSacProf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi Everyone, It's been awhile since anyone has posted in this thread, but I just wanted to pop in and personally thank Chick-on and Wherever for posting their routes to the Diving Board. I traced both of their routes on google earth and loaded the map onto Gaia GPS and that's what my buddy and I used two days ago to make it to the Diving Board for sunset. We took the Emerald Pool route up aby MtSacProf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quoteplawrence QuoteMtSacProf Just when I was about ready to give up, I found a small trickle of a creek and spent several minutes dousing myself but didn't drink any of it as I didn't have a filter. I felt much better after this, and an hour later, I was back to my car. Thanks for your detailed trip report. Glad you made it back okay. But if you're in Yosemite again and short on water by MtSacProf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks again everyone for the responses. PLawrence, Shilo, and Wherever - Very timely warnings as I almost got myself in quite a bit of trouble yesterday. I finally made it up to Fern Ledge, but I came fairly close to not making it back down due to severe dehydration. Here's the rundown on yesterday's hike/climb: 1) Set off at 7:30 AM with 32 ounces of water (oops) and my Nikon D750 with oby MtSacProf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks again for the replies everyone. I'm headed up there tonight so I might give it another go tomorrow morning. More water and less camera gear, so we'll see how far I make it. I could easily chicken out again, but I just want another look at that ledge before giving up completely. Cheers, Billby MtSacProf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks Chick-on and Shiro. I dug around a bit more and found another thread here: It looks even more sketchy than I was imagining when I was up there. Could be a good thing I turned around when I did. I might try to get a little higher next time, but there's no way on God's green earth that I'm going to make it up behind those falls. I just want to make it up high enough to get a fisby MtSacProf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Last Sunday, I decided that I would take a "quick" hike up the Fern Ledge Trail to get some shots of the Upper Falls from the other side. After losing and finding the trail a few times after the initial assent from the Valley Loop Trail, I finally arrived at the overlook of the lower falls (Sunnyside Bench?) after an hour or so. Feeling rather pleased with myself, I backtracked a littby MtSacProf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I was discussing the possibility of shooting the Horsetail from on top of the South side with a friend of mine and we were wondering what it would look like. I brought up Taft Point, but I told him that you would have to be certifiably insane to shoot around Taft Point when it was covered by snow. ...And then I found this shot by Josh Miller: Horsetail Falls From Taft Point It turnsby MtSacProf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Sorry....back again with another question for Chick-on or anyone else who may have attempted this: Chick on...in your shot from Eagle Peak and from google earth, it LOOKS like one could simply walk down through a bit of forest, cross a dry creek bed, and then simply walk over to Eagle Tower from Eagle Peak. Am I missing something? If one were to walk to Eagle Peak, it looks like you would maby MtSacProf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks so much for all of your kind responses. I'm hoping to head up there this Sunday, weather permitting. They're calling for a 30 percent chance of showers right now, but no mention of thunderstorms. It would be just my luck to make it all the way out to Eagle Peak, jump up and down in celebration and then get hit by lightning. I think I'll save Eagle Tower for my next attempt, but I'll loby MtSacProf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi Everyone, Someone was kind enough to offer Eagle Tower as an alternative to hiking all the way out to Eagle Peak the last time I posted here. I'm very interested in the particular view from Eagle Tower, but I've just spent the last hour or so looking for a TRAIL from the top of the Falls and I can't find anything. The Tower itself shows up on google maps, but I'm guessing that people proby MtSacProf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotechick-on Just thought I'd say that I just went up Eagle Peak (and Tower and El Cap). As expected... the trail is somewhat discernable... but I knew where it was suppose to be too. Microspikes to get to rim is advisable... and snowshoes from there on. The snow is highly compacted so depending on the recent temps you may be able to get away with just walking w/o snowshoes. It's supposed to warm up this weekend, and I'll be up there with several friends hoping for a decent shot. I was up last Friday, right after it snowed, and it was flowing pretty well. During the past two years, I've never been able to actually SEE the falls from the valley floor, but on Friday, you could seem them very easily from just beyond the El Cap picnic area. My only fear now is that evby MtSacProf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Chick-on and Wherever - Thank you so much for your advice. This is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I had a feeling that the number one reason I wasn't seeing many photos from that location was that it must be really tough to get to in the Winter months. I read somewhere that the hike wasn't a big deal, even in the winter, but it sounds a bit more complicated than I thought.by MtSacProf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hi folks! I'm new here, so sorry if this topic has come up before, but I did a quick search and didn't find anything posted in the forum. My question is: Is it impossible to do a 1 day hike to Eagle Peak from Camp 4 during the Winter? Has anyone in this forum been up there in January or February? If so, can I get by with snowshoes? Is the trail still visible under all of that snow? Is itby MtSacProf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
