The information being reported is a little confusing and contradictory. Some news papers are reporting that they are planning to keep access to the park open, but not actually pay employees working in the parks. Others say that California parks will close, while others will be allowed to stay open. We are due to visit this weekend, but have already cancelled a day while we wait to see what the goby thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Does anyone know what the status of the Mariposa Grove is? I know that when it was first closed you could still hike in from the trail leading from the Wawonna to the upper part of the grove. Can one still do this. Or is the grove completely closed. We are returning in mid June and staying at Wawonna for two nights.by thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Can anyone who has been to the valley recently say how the mosquitoes are in the meadows and along the river. Last year they were almost non existent when we were there in June. But, I know from experience that this changes from year to year based on rainfall and standing water in the meadows.by thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Anyone have the history, or even better, pictures, of these tiles when they were in the previous version of the lodge?by thechief - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
There is a lot of "that won't happen to me, it's always someone else". mentality out there. Last year we parked at the trail head to hike up to Mt. Hoffman, and parked right in front of a bear warning sign and a storage box, was a jeep, with several boxes and packages of snack cakes and chips, right on the passenger seat. As I get older, I think that the people who are simply paying attby thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The bike paths and roads make it so easy to get from place to place, and see all of the valleys amazing sights. Often faster than cars too. Once we get to the park and find our lodging, we don't even look at the car till time to go home. We either bring our bikes, or rent them for a day. We can stop as often as we like for the photos we take, and boy is it easy to find a parking spot with a bike,by thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
That must be what I saw on line before. Having never noticed it before, despite having driven through and stopping at El Portal many times, I am certainly going to make a history stop this time. Are there any other ruins or remains of the original railroad that stopped there? Buildings, water towers, homes, train station, etc.?by thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It may sound like a lot of money for a lawsuit. But how much does DNC make in profit each year? If the amount sought in a lawsuit is not high enough to actually grab the attention of the company or management involved. They do not have much incentive to change their practices which caused the injury in the first place. DNC is an invisible organization that holds a monopoly on park concessions andby thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Does anyone know if there is a surviving train engine from the Yosemite Valley Railroad on display anywhere? I thought I saw a photo from about a year or so ago of someone standing next to a train engine and it was captioned in a way that led me to believe the engine was the one I am asking about, and that it was in Merced. But repeated internet searches have come up empty lately. We are thinkingby thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Full size scans can be saved from my Flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/chiefranger/sets/72157640317331676/ I just obtained this great piece of Yosemite history and want to make sure that it does not disappear. So I am making it available to the public. The more it is shared. The better the chances that it will be around for future Yosemite fans to enjoy.by thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Sorry, it took me a few minutes to realize that I had copied the photos URL incorrectly. Fixed now. We are heading up to the park this weekend, starting our stay with two night at Wawona. We plan to take the shuttle up the Mariposa Grove, then hike back to the hotel. We have never taken this hike, any suggestions?by thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I have seen this same thing in Bryce Canyon as well. Though it is in an area of the trail where it does not take away from some other feature of the park. It looks alien, out of place, or like something for a movie set. I wonder if it is something that out of country visitors do in their parks at home, or is it Americans who build these stacks of rocks? I use a stereoscope or stereoviewer. They can be found on Ebay for about $35 to $50 for a simple one, or really nice ones go for as much as a couple hundred. Or, you can buy a build it yourself kit from Amazon for about $50. I stained and built one for my mother for Christmas. The ones that are not kits, are usually about 100 years old, and can be made of variouse woods, or even metals. But, youby thechief - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
