I was in a commercial airliner once and the pilot came on the intercom to say that it was the crew's last flight together, and that as a treat he was going to fly up to Yosemite. He then flew the plane up the Merced Canyon all the way to Half Dome, where he turned on a wing, a full 360 degrees, with Half Dome maybe 1000 feet below us. This was a regularly scheduled, commercial airline flight.by dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I remember a jet screaming through the Valley heading straight at Half Dome. I was sure the pilot was intending to commit suicide by crashing into the face. At the very, very last moment, when it was maybe a couple hundred feet from the Dome, the jet went verticle, shooting up parallel to the face. I always wondered what it would have been like to have been on the top of Half Dome at thatby dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was living in the Mountain House when it burned. The fire burned up all my stuff (which at the time could be stuffed into a pillow case).by dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I just want to tell you that looking at your pictures gives me an almost painful yearning to get up on top of some dome, almost any dome, in the back country of Yosemite. I can't say "thanks" every time you post pictures, but rest assured that every time you do so I'm looking at them and I'm feeling extremely grateful.by dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks, Chick-on, you're the best. Sounds like late-July in a dry year like this one might be the prime time for this trip -- enough water for fun, but not so much that you can't cross the river. And I like the picture of the inlet with all the logs and branches that have been washed downstream. It makes me want to go hike around the ridge and look out onto the reservoir and the cliffs.by dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I just noticed that there is no trail from Pate Valley to where the Tuolumne River gushes into Hetch Hetchy. There might be some nice fishing in that stretch. It might be nice to see that end of HH. But the fact that there is no trail suggests that there is some barrier making it impossible to get from Pate Valley to HH. And as for the time of year, I'm wondering if there is any time of year tby dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
OK, how about if I reverse the question -- is Pate Valley to Hetch Hetchy passable?by dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
On a topo map, it looks like following the Toulumne River from Hetch Hetch to Pate Valley should be a piece of cake. Four miles, six hundred feet. But there's no trail on the map. So can this route be bushwacked, or is there something that makes it impossible? Or at least not fun?by dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I know. I've been looking for the YV petroglyphs for years, and it was impossible to get any info even before the vandals stole those other petroglyphs. If nobody here will tell me, maybe I'll try a FOIA request and see what happens.by dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
For years I've been trying to find the petroglyphs in Yosemite Valley, but apparently the location is one of the best-kept of secrets. Anyone who knows willing to share?by dogfacegeorge - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
