QuoteDavidK42 Terrific report and it looks like a fantastic trip. The pictures ranged from very good to stunning. Sounds like some of your adventures were a bit too...well..."adventurous" for me but otherwise I'd love to check this area out one of these days! Thanks for taking the time to write this up! Thanks! It worked out well. I really only felt scared that one time. The rby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
As someone who lives out East, I really appreciate all of the volunteer work that goes into working on the trails. I always hope to run into trail crews when I'm out there. Hopefully, one day I'll live out there and will be able to contribute!by mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Sorry if this is a repeat for some people, just thought it would be useful if someone was looking for info on the area. Hi, and thanks to everyone that provided information to make this trip possible for me. I get about a week a year to do a backpacking trip out west. We've only been at this a short time and we wanted to try some cross country travel, but nothing too nasty. And to get betteby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
haha. There was a bigger one than that down on (along) the Panorama Trail. Had I known what we found out the next day, we would have camped after Bunnell, but we didn't know what we didn't know. Prob would have pushed on anyway, but the log crossing where the washout was looked iced up. And man, was I tired.by mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotechick-on You were very brave for camping in Lost Valley. Large dead tress nearby... make me very nervous.... That thought crossed my mind more than once. Not brave, just lesser of several evils with time of day/sleet/not knowing other sites in the area.by mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteNot quite The Geezer, but getting there And sounds like it was a great trip even if you didn't get to most of your planned destinations...which is usually the case in Yosemite... Quotenwhkr Great TR and cool pics!! Thanks for sharing. I haven't been to Merced yet and this looks like a great time to be there. Bummer about the CR but post-holing sucks, especially when there are rocks oby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
In January, I found out I was going to have 5 free nights near Fresno in May. I found out that it wasn’t a good time to be doing what I wanted to do. I looked into Skyline to Sea and Henry Coe, but I really wanted to be in the mountains and I had the gear for it. The melt was going well and it was 70 and sunny in the valley leading up to my trip. Glacier Point Road opened up and we had an iby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quotebalzaccom Have you been to Yosemite before? I'd suggest more time in the valley, day-hiking, if that's a possibility. Thanks! I’ve been to Yosemite a couple times and have hit most of the frontcountry areas. This will be my first time backpacking thereby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We have four nights to backpack May 19-22. We have a permit for Yosemite Falls, planning on a day trip to El Cap, then North Dome, Snow Creek (bummer there is still no camping south or east of the footbridge) and out Mirror Lake. We're comfortable with the fact that there will be snow. I'll call the rangers a week beforehand to see what they recommend as far as traction goes. And we'll see whby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quotehulkman75 I was in TM yesterday, and it was real smoky in the afternoon with some thunderstorms around 4 pm. Zero views from Olmsted Point. Dropping into the valley to see if 41 had opened (it hadn't and there were no signs prior to the 41 turn off saying as such...ugh!), could barely see the top of El Cap, no views of Half Dome. We had 5 days around Nelson Lake/Rafferty Creek/Vogelsangby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks! I'm leaning towards Thousand Island Lake because there is less smoke there. Although that can change . I've never backpacked any of it, so it's all good. We'll see tomorrow when I'm driving up 395. Good luck on your trip!by mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hi, I'm headed out west tomorrow. My original plan was to loop around (and up) Mt Hoffman, go over and see Clouds Rest for sunrise and sunset, and bum around Sunrise and Cathedral Lakes. My backup plan was the Thousand Island Lake loop out of Agnew Meadows. By backup to my backup was over Kearsarge Pass to (maybe) Rae Lakes. I've been watching websites (primarily https://www.wildlandfiresmby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I called today and the shuttle is running until Sept 10, so that means I can get my car where I want and take the shuttle to the start. Although it does mean I have to know where I'm going to end up . That HSC loop is a possibility as a route, I'll probably camp a ways before or after each one. One more week!by mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thank you for the smoke tips. I'm not sure if going to Thousand Island Lake instead will be any better. Or if I just not worry about it and take the views when the wind direction smiles on me.by mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks. That will be Plan A! I'm definitely staying flexible. I may just stay at May Lake, because I'd like to do Mt Hoffman and doing that and getting to Cloud's Rest in the same day most likely isn't going to happen .by mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks! You're probably right. I got the permit with this in mind Polly Dome -> May Lake (+ mt hoffman) -> Cloud's Rest -> Sunrise Lake #2 -> Upper Cathedral Lake -> up early and out. Then I read too many trip reports, and started thinking about Nelson Lake, Echo Lake, Vogelsang, Merced and Brunell Cascades, and so on. Too much beautiful stuff to see in one trip. Hi, I'm arriving at TM permit station around 4:00 on Sept 6th. I have to be back on the road the morning of the 11th. I kind of lucked out with timing on a number of things and took advantage of the opportunity. I've been to the valley a couple times and was mesmerized, I was hoping to explore around the high country part. I'm not sure when I'll get to go back, so I'm finding myself planniby mckee80 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteLBFam Congrats on the proposal! I proposed to my fiancee a little over a year ago on our backpacking trip along the Teton Crest Trail in the Grand Tetons. I did it on of all places "Death Canyon Shelf" right after we packed up and were ready to head out of our campsite on morning three. Sorry to keep you all hanging so long . Things went great, although not as expected, which was expected (so I guess they did kind of go as expected). We got into the park early. I thought about doing it at the little side tunnel going to tunnel view, but there wasn't a lot of space. We decided to do the Mist Trail that first day. Hi, My girlfriend wants to take pictures at this spot. Does anyone know where it is? I would imagine near Glacier Point somewhere. And if anyone knows, is it in a place that is likely to be accessible in two weeks? Thanks! Sean Ugh. Didn't post the pics right. Wow, thank you all so much for the recommendations! And congratulations to you guys that proposed or are proposing to propose there. I'm guessing a lot of that goes on there. I think we'll go to Columbia Rock (and spur trail), Big Oak Flat Road (the non rockfall portion), and we'll be at Sentinel Dome (road willing) and the Mist Trail. If you were going to be in Yosemite in mid May and wanted to pop the big question to a special lady, where would you do it? There was a turnout along 120 that she was really digging, so I was thinking about hiking down from there. But, I don't know if I could find it again, and 120 is closed anyway.
