Hotrod, Last week on da way to Womp-a-ma Falls: The statement by Almost about rangers wanting you to carry a bear can is probably true. They probably "want" you to carry one year round. But... it's not the whole story. There are places and times that you actually don't need a bear can in the backcountry.by bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
A few comments.... I guess plenty of people would say you need to be mad to go snow camping. As for the article it doesn't go into great depth about what it takes. I'll just say it's not THAT different than any other time of the year. At the end of the day you need to ensure you stay warm and dry, and have food. How you accomplish those things is up to you... In a related note: Thought I'd share this one. Not the greatest print itself... but the first time I've seen a cub print in the snow... and I've seen a LOT of bear tracks in the snow over the years. (this was taken just before descending Indian Canyon two weeks ago)by bill-e-g - General Discussion
Yup... that view. hotrod, the connector is simply the trail from Clark Pt. (which is on the JMT) down to the Mist Trail just below the bridge above the Silver Apron. (it's on the map above)... if you go on that trail DO NOT miss the lookout pt. where that picture was taken.by bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I cannot stress it enough.... get the SMALLEST/LIGHTEST pair that works with your weight. I weight 150-ish... and I bought MSR 22" last year after using 30" shoes.... Even with a fully loaded pack they work just fine in the Sierra snow. They've been tested even right after a snow dumped over a foot of snow on us. MSR 22" is rated up to 180 lbs btw.by bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotehotrod4x5 If you make it to Clark point, even on a day hike, you might as well head down to the brink of Vernal, don't you think? Only thing about that is that iIt's a 500 ft. climb back up if you go down to Vernal. No need to go all the way to the brink though too... the Vernal Fall lookout on the connector trail (only trail open at that time) down to the Mist trail... is one of my fby bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Good one. It's still nearly a month before winter starts... but to answer your question... yes... a fair number venture that far... but not many much further... same is true for top of Yosemite Falls... get beyond Yosemite Pt. though and you got the park to yourself last late Dec. was very surprised at how many peeps were on the Snow Creek trail... Lookie here for the maintained snowshoe trails: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/brochures.htm They have brochures for Badger Pass, Crane Flat, and Mariposa Grove. Any of the Sequoia Groves are pretty neat to snowshoe into... Dewey is a must do IMO. (I really do not like GP road at all though) Favorite? Hmm... well... uh... that'd be a trail we busted by ourself. I've postedby bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was giving you the benefit of the doubt... I'll just state some things and expand on other I already mentioned and you can go from there: - Right now you pretty much HAVE to start at Happy Isles if heading towards Starr King in any expedient manner... and go up the winter route... the trail to Nevada Falls is open all year... - You NEED showshoes right now... there isn't inches of snby bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Uh... sorry... now I remember... yes, the Visitor Center will issue permits. Although I never bother since I enter on 120 and just self reg. From the nps site: "Wilderness center is closed, but visitor center is open for wilderness permits 7 days/week from 9 am to 5 pm."by bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'd be impressed if you can pull that off in 4 days this time of year, right now. Red Peak Pass will be interesting to say the least. I'd like to see pictures if you do... Not sure why you'd go to GP first... (the road is closed so you can't start there) If you're coming 140 then just go the Valley Wilderness Center and there should be self-reg permits on the porch.by bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. You need a permit year-round to stay overnight in the wilderness. For winter travel if you run into a ranger he/she may not ask for it though since it's self reg. The usual... tell someone where you are going, yadda yadda yadda applies. btw... After Badger Pass opens if you hike from there then you HAVE to get a permite THERE. Not self-reg.by bill-e-g - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It's self registration now. Nothing needs to be open. You can fill out a permit for yourself at any entrance station and be on your way. In the past the permits at, say, Big Oak Flat entrance, used to say "No LYV" or "No Yosemite Valley"... so you would have to go to the wilderness Center to pick up a permite. QuoteDearborn By chance, do you have any recent images of the old Wawona Road and the Fort Monroe area? I always wanted to hike the old road, but never took the time before I moved to the Yellowstone area. This is the best I can do for you: http://picasaweb.google.com/yosemite.chick.on/OldWawonaRd Somehow I don't even have a photo of "Ft. Monroe". Why? Sounds fun. A worthy endeavor imo is to continue along the ridge there (there's open granite in that area) and hook up with the intermediate snow shoe trail that heads to Dewey. Looks like you were off the road on your waypoint. Here's a map from 1910 with the road the way it used to be. We have only followed it a little bit past Ft. I put some comments here regarding that old road too: http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,29205,29713#msg-29713 You can whack your way to Turtleback from there too... but I can say the wife complained quite a bit... and she's done quite a bit of xcountry with me... He's talking the Wawona Tunnel. No problemo. It's the spire east of Upper Yosemite Fall. We've seen people atop it many times. You've looked up at it countless times yourself no doubt.
