Put some reflective tape around it. Sometimes bears swat the can or roll it down a hill trying to open it. Sure makes it easier to find with that reflective tape.by The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I can't help with the lodging question, but the Mono Lake visitor center in Lee Vining is good for kids. The Rock Creek/Mosquito Flats area has lots of room for kids to run around. Then there's always Mammoth (big elephant, etc for the kids). And, it they're old enough, Devils Postpile and Rainbow falls.by The Other Tom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
All of the HSCs have a backpackers campground nearby with well established sites. The HSCs themselves have concrete pads where the cabins are set up for the season. Since they are closed this year, the cabins will not be set up but the pads may have the metal poles that are used for the tens laying on them, so generally they're not suitable for camping. The water faucets at the camps are probaby The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the update. Yeah, $337 is outrageous for the lodge. Is that the pre-Covid price as well?by The Other Tom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
You say the high is projected to be 91...is that in the valley? It'll be cooler on HD. Yeah, impossible to social distance on the cables. Personally, I wouldn't do it but it depends on your risk tolerance if want them to do it. And I agree with ags about the T-storm risk. T-storms are very dangerous on HD. QuoteSouth Cackalacky Thanks for all of the input everyone! The Other Tom, we’re neighbors, I live in the upstate as well! I’ve updated my profile, yes I’m ready. Been practicing all of my life in the North Carolina hills. Yes, I know it’s a whole different world than Yosemite, but we’re ready. We applied for overnight permits for Cathedral Lakes and Sunrise Lakes trailheads but wereby The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
As I recall, it's an easy hike from 120 to Mono pass, mostly flat with a few small stream crossings. You should be able to find many suitable camping spots and your kids will love it. By the way, it's always nice to see a fellow South Cackalacky-ian here on this forum . I live in the upstate. Edit: I'm pretty sure you have to camp outside the park if you go to Mono Pass. I'd recommend hiking from AM to TM meadow because: 1. Permits are easier to get 2. IMO the best scenery is from AM to Donahue. If you need to bail for some reason then you've seen the "best". As far as I know, the most practical option to get there is as you describe. Look at the schedules and plan accordingly. Unfortunately Kendall Vanhook Bumpass lost his leg when it busted through the crust and got scalded. But boardwalks make it pretty safe. I've attempted it twice. I wasn't prepared the first time and ran out of water, so we bailed. The second time thunderstorms were in the area, so we bailed again. So you're right, it is a challenge. At least it was for us.by The Other Tom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quotebalzaccom QuoteThe Other Tom If fewer people are climbing HD, it stands to reason there would be fewer SAR calls, etc. But did the PERCENTAGE of SAR calls, etc go down, or stay about the same?
