Where did you get this info? I didn't see anything on the NPS website...maybe I didn't look hard enough?by cthenn - General Discussion
Bill, my email is "unhideded" now (I think). If not let me know. Where is your map showing your tracks? Could you post a link? I don't want you to become a shopping mall of gps tracks, but I may ask for a few more!!! Re; the camera...wide as in widescreen...I get it. I thought it had a wide angle lens.by cthenn - General Discussion
I hear you...but I'm not sure what other system could be better??? Before there were online reservations, it was worse. I don't even bother trying the valley...I got my Tuolumne Meadows reservations for the next weekend, so I'm happy. But at 7:10, that weekend was also sold out. You could try going to TM on your designated weekend, because half the sites are first come first served. Alsoby cthenn - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm sure people are tired of me retelling my tale of hiking this trail (went to El Cap), but last year, hiking on May 5th, there was a ton of hard packed snow. If you don't know where the trail is, you won't know if there is any snow on the ground. I had to use my GPS to keep on the "trail". I didn't use snowshoes, but hiking a full day on an unstable and slippery surface is quite tiby cthenn - General Discussion
I don't see how there is a chance in heck the high country opens *that* early... Didn't the mountains just get 1-2' of new snow just this past week?by cthenn - General Discussion
Quotey_p_w Sorry - maybe I didn't make my intentions clear. My last day camping the Valley is on a Thursday. I was thinking of pulling up camp and driving to the postpile on Thursday - then staying in Mammoth Lakes that night before going home. The other alternative I was thinking was to pull up camp, spend the day visiting sites along Tioga Road, stay in Mammoth Lakes that night, and visit thby cthenn - General Discussion
Very extremely awesome photos! The ones of the rockfall are incredible. Where's the exposure? I thought it was just some high angle scrambling to get there. Once you get there though...by cthenn - General Discussion
That's a helluva drive just to see the postpile. Personally, if I were going to drive all that extra time and distance (per Google, 120 miles, 3+ hours), I'd make it more than a day trip at the end of a Yosemite trip...but that's just me.by cthenn - General Discussion

Ah yes, this brings back memories... did this last year in early May as a replacement hike up the 4-mile trail, which was still closed. Hot, and dry as a bone up Yosemite Falls, then 100 feet over the rim, 4 feet of hard packed snow. Went the whole way in just hiking boots. I had never hiked that trail before, so we were 100% reliant on my GPS to navigate the "trail". One of the moby cthenn - General Discussion

I have the Vista HCx, and I love it. The best part about it is the ability to add SD cards. I had a Summit HC before, and it only had 24K onboard. The vista has all the bells and whistles (electronic compass and barometric altimeter, auto-routing, plus all the standard stuff), with the added SD card slot. Just check Garmin's website, they have a very nice comparison page (between their brandby cthenn - General Discussion

HHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, OOOOOOOOKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But seriously, yeah I remember being excited that GP road was open May 2nd, because that was the weekend we were there. I actually think the 4MT opened the next weekend, or maybe 2 weeks, because I saw it on their website and was annoyed that we missed it by *that* much. eeek is right, that's what we wby cthenn - General Discussion
Totally agree with Mike. Your post wasn't too clear, are you saying you are concerned because you will need to have "food" out at night to feed your baby? Or are you just generally concerned about bear safety? Either way, you really have nothing to worry about in a developed and way overpopulated campground. Be sure you are ready to get your spot the moment the on-sale for your targby cthenn - General Discussion
Hmm, ok. I know last year it was after mid-May because I specifically remember planning a trip last year to do a hike including the 4MT. It was closed so we ended up doing Yos Falls Trail to El Cap. Just above the top of the Falls trail was all hard-packed snow. That was a fun hike w/o any kind of traction devices... I guess if we have a late winter it could be a pretty late opening. Hey all, anyone know what time of year (as specific as possible) the 4-mile trail opens? I know it varies, depending on conditions, but is there a time frame I should look for? What should be the latest I can expect it to remain closed? Thanks!by cthenn - General Discussion
I forgot the on-sale for mid-June Yosemite campsites started this morning...and when I logged on terribly late at 7:25, it was all gone. Oh well, wasn't too keen on valley camping... But...soon TM will be available for reservation (is it Feb 15 or March 15?). I may not have access to a computer, so how does the phone reservation system compare to online? I figure it may be easier since TM doeby cthenn - General Discussion

I think Bear did tell you one can eat Manzanita berries. He also knelt down between a Yarrow plant and Hemlock and warn people that one can heal you, and one can kill you. I'm not sure I'd eat any "wild edibles" in the Sierra unless I had to. Too many killer plants/mushrooms!by cthenn - General Discussion

Fun thread! About Bear, yeah, he slides down what looks to be the shoulder of Half Dome...and why? There's almost always a safer way around. His excuse for taking these incredibly dangerous routes is that "it saves time". Ooh, like it may take an extra hour or two, so instead I'll risk serious injury/death to save some time. It's gotta be one of the stupidest things you can do...riby cthenn - General Discussion
