I agree. Send him up Echo Peaks or to the saddle between Cockscomb and Matthes Crest. Either should wear him out within your round trip schedule. Better yet, have him go alone up the Bud Lake trail instead of Cathedral trail, over the pass at Echo peaks, traverse to the saddle, and then down to Echo Lake area. That should make his day. When honeybees swarm it's usually the old queen that leaves the hive, taking some portion of the colony with her. Normally, bees in swarming mode will not sting because their abdomens are full of as much honey as they could manage to take with them to set up housekeeping elsewhere. When they are that full it is very difficult for them to bend their bodies in a manner required to utilize the stiby tomdisco - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quoteyosemitedawn I have tried all the new stuff from Eucalyptus Oil to dryer sheets and I too will stick with Deet. In a bad year at the park it was the only thing that really worked. Dawn I think Dawn pretty much covered it. The only likely improvement is spraying your clothing with Permathrin and confining the Deet to limited exposed areas.by tomdisco - General Discussion

Remember,---if they ever come out with a green version then people will likely fight for it because it purportedly tastes better. Then the pay loader equipment arrives to clean up the mob. Rangers around the country often roll their eyes when you mention Yosemite bears. They seem to be far more educated when it comes to breaking into cars for food than anywhere else. Possibly a factor of greater human impact over the years? Anyway, once they learned how to do it they passed the skill onto each subsequent generation. The only deer I ever hit was in Yosemite going 30 in a 35 zone. Actually, the deer hit me, launching itself off the opposite high embankment into the side of my rental. I never even saw it until it shook itself off in my rear view mirror. Now when driving in the park my head is on a swivel. Wildlife can come out of nowhere. Olde Dude "may" be on a trail much of the time but chick-on will not be. He can cover almost twice as much ground in the same amount of time as everybody that's else sticking to a trail. A detour here; a detour there, ---but he always returns to the group. Part of it is his hobby of locating survey markers. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
The hike to Glen Aulin would be fine for your purposes. Most of it is relatively flat until you cross the first footbridge. Until then you will get a good dose of Tuolumne Meadows topography along a tame portion of the Tuolumne River. This will include views of several domes and crossing of a couple granite sheets next to the river. After the bridge is a several hundred foot descent to Glen Aby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Mosquitos will be bad in June but you will find if you camp several hundred feet away from the lakes it's not really all that bad. Within 100' of the lakes they will be all over you. by the time you see the lower lake it will be time to put on a fresh dose of bug juice. Having your clothes treated with Permathrin wouldn't hurt either. I recommend going in via Dog lake and out via the westerby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I disagree with the idea of buying two pairs until you have tested the first pair under real life trail conditions on a multi-day hike in the high country where they will really put to the test. There's no way REI can properly simulate trail conditions. Another thing to be certain of is that you have the proper size shoe. I've found I require one size larger than I would in a street shoe. You have already received some excellent advice. I'll add my 2 cents worth: 1. Try a high altitude day hike. The most accessible one I can think of would be to the ridge above upper Granite Lake. The Gaylor Lakes/Granite Lakes area is a relatively short day hike but takes you up to the best view area at about 11,300', the last half of it off-trail. If you are feeling up to it then try thiby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Y_P_M, I too am thinking this may be some sort of arch support issue. The arch area is known as the metatarsus and one private shoe company used to make shoes with a small round metatarsul support ring in every shoe to eliminate a host of foot and leg pain problems. Another distinct but weird possibility is simply not drinking enough water! In any event only a podiatrist can make the proper cby tomdisco - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Regarding the Mist trail: Lots of day hike folks never make it beyond the big footbridge across the river a little ways below Vernal Fall and the trail is actually asphalt up to the bridge. You have a clear view of Vernal Fall from the bridge.
