A friend has asked me where he might park along the Glacier Point road, and unfortunately, I don't know. Is there trailhead parking for the Panorama Trail near Glacier Point, or is it ok to park overnight anywhere at Glacier Point? The Yosemite website showing trails is blank for parking at Glacier Point. Is there trailhead parking for Ostrander Lake? Thanks!by SteveC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Regarding postholing: Decades ago when I was a university student, I'd lead a Memorial Weekend backpack. Several years, we had large amounts of snow. We never took snow shoes, and never needed them. By late spring, the snow has consolidated so much that you generally walk right over it, never sinking more than an inch. The only exception is when you are in a boulder field, and so cannot juby SteveC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Regarding the cold: I started out wearing a lightweight long-sleeve T plus a short-sleeve T. Took off the long-sleeve at the top of Vernal Fall. I had a rain parka in the pack for the Mist part, wore it, but really didn't need it. Didn't use it on the way down, got slightly wet, but it dries fast. The mist was less than I expected, probably due to the recent cooler weather. I also carby SteveC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The Cables are Down on Half Dome! With 24/7 permits required all summer, Except when the cables are "down", I began thinking about a May climb last winter. And now with the scalper/hackers wiping out the permits too, there was even more reason to go this month. I had climbed the Dome with "cables down" back in 1974, so I thought it was about time to try it again. Lastby SteveC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was told by the Yosemite rangers ten days ago that the Half Dome trail was "not recommended", because of snow and icy conditions. I hiked on Saturday, found no ice, but a half mile of snow before the sub-dome, and several hundred feet of snow on the sub-dome, some pretty steep. But the snow was in great condition: soft enough for kicking footsteps, firm enough so no postholing.by SteveC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteSoCalCPA"It kills us, because there's so little we can do about it," DeLappe said. Good grief! They limit people to four Half Dome permits per call. If that can be enforced, why can't they limit the number of permits issued to a single I.P. (computer) address, or a single credit card number. If Inyo National Forest can enforce the non-transferrability of Whitney permits, whaby SteveC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I shot this picture today, Dec 26, 2010, from Freeway 99 in Turlock, where it crosses over Monte Vista Ave. I posted a little write-up here: Half Dome from Turlock, CAby SteveC - General Discussion
> Guy with permit of 8-10am thinks "it's easy"... ends up not getting to subdome until 11am and the ranger there says what? Same thing he says to people in the current system who don't have the permit: "Turn around and go back!"by SteveC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Interesting idea mentioned in the comments after the Modesto Bee news article: Yosemite: Permits mandatory all Half Dome climbs I kind of like Uncle55's suggestion: QuoteThere ARE ways to alleviate the crowding without preventing people from climbing Half Dome. How about passes to climb the cables in specific time periods... like 8-10 AM, 10-12 noon, noon to 2 PM, and so on. Or maybe try poby SteveC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Since Mike posted on WhitneyZone, I thought I'd add a pointer. The third post down shows the picture below that I created from Tony Immoos' work with labels on all the visible peaks I could identify. There are quite a few more links in the post below it, too. The WPSMB thread is here. Here's the annotated picture. I've been up to Sierra Point -- have you? Does it start the same place, or does the Grizzly Point route start farther north? Dragged my wife up to SP on a Sierra Club hike while she was pregnant. Wow, Burro! That is a great video. Adams himself! Have to chuckle at their using ropes. But the edge at the lip is truly steep -- it was too steep for me to walk along. One could hold the lip and move sideways, but then it goes for several hundred feet. Seriously, that one tough spot is only 5 or 6 feet high, and it is at a slope that you can almost climb. Quotemrcondron Six tries to see if I was quick enough. I wasn't. Must move on. From that location on Montpelier Rd, there is an orchard obscuring the view. Go to the camera site: From the silo, drive half mile north on Montpelier Rd, then 1.5 mile west on Keys Rd, then .6 mile south on Hall Rd. You should see something like this (posted on Flickr by 'The Big YZ' in her "ISO Half Dome Adventure". Half Dome is between the silo and the dirt pile. Bring baby SteveC - General Discussion

Forrestranger: These people came all the way from North Korea -- they get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to climb in Yosemite. Maybe it was a bad decision to go, but I can understand their desire to push ahead. Now... Does anyone know the real location of the avalanche? I can't imagine seven climbers on the "north face" of Half Dome, as the news reports say.by SteveC - General Discussion
