I can say a lot won't get used. An example. I booked permits for two days in a row. Why, because I am taking my brother in law up there and he is paying for the rooms. I didn't want to have bad wet weather one day and ruin the trip, so i booked it over two days to try and protect ourselves. I wonder if i hike it the first day, can i give the unused following day permits to the wilderness office,by Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
They said the permits were transferable, but not without providing all of your information to someone. On the permit it does list my name, address, phone number, and the last few digits of my credit card.by Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So I had the unlucky pleasure of having booked a permit for Half Dome. My brother in law has wanted to hike half dome, and since i have done it a few times, i offered to be his guide. The permits for the trip are actually listed on the Rec.gov website as tours, which could be a little confusing, since they have a different area for permits. Once i booked the tour, which sold out in a few minutes,by Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
THe way i read it, state laws still apply. So in Yosemite's case, since it is in California you can not have a loaded concealed firearm on your person. So this should be no change from current policy. It will affect those that do have concealed carry permits and police officers who before were legal as far as the state was concerned but breaking federal law once in the park.by Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'm going up for the day today, that looks awesome. Thanks for the pictures.by Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am blown away by them. On my backpacking trip last year, i took what i thought were the most beautiful photos in the world, only when i got home they weren't as impressive. My point and shoot just doesn't hack it. I eventually want a camera that stuns, but with a 5 year old, 3 year old, and 1 year old, my budget too is a little tight.by Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I need a professional camera. My 8 megapixal sony point and shoot, never looks that good. Thanks for sharing the photos, they are awesomeby Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thanks Vince for posting this. I have done half dome and don't have alot of desire to do it again. BUT, my brother in law wants to do it, so i told him i would show him the way this June. Hope i can get a permit now that i have a curry village reservation. How does this work when a group of say boy scouts wants to go since you can only get a reservation for four. How am i going to get a permit, wby Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I knew that i would not be let down by the great members on here. Member JNCS4X4 took care of me. They sent me several photos 360 degrees of the spot. It answered all of my questions and they also gave me additional info because they had stayed in that same spot. Thanks for Forest Ranger for the offer to take photos, I think i got everything i need. Since i am going to try and make this an additiby Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for all of the info. I had seen that photo and the information from recreation.gov. My worry is a couple of things. 1. I know that it can be tight in there, it doesn't show the approach to the spot, it is 10 times easier to back a RV, then it is to crank and back in a large trailer, there just might not be enough room, depending what is in front of the site. 2. Thanks Mtn Man. You made me feel a little better. I am going to hike half dome again this year and Mt Lyell the first weekend in June. I will check out the site that weekend, before i bring the family up the next weekend. We will be there June 11-17.by Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yes, I am going in June. If it is a double driveway i should be fine (I hope). We have a 30 foot trailer with two slides. I normally take it to the beach 7-8 times a year to camp with the kids on the weekend. I have not taken it to yosemite, since that is normally my time alone for backpacking. The pictures didn't show the whole site (It actually looked pretty tight), and i was worried with all tby Roadrash - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am asking a favor of anyone going to Yosemite in the next 2 months. If while in Yosemite, can you snap a photo of Lower pines Campsite 50. The photo at yosemitecampsites isn't clear, i have a trailer with slide outs and it is pretty long, i am trying to see if it fits. Thanks my fellow forum members. I went to Yellowstone this past year, and they told us to keep all of the food in the cars. The Ranger stated they don't have "Gangster Bears" like California. That was a weird experience.by Roadrash - General Discussion
Copy that on hanging basket, in regards to the lakes, which lake is nicer Emeric or Bernice??? I just finished packing and my pack weighs 38 pounds. I think my kids through some freeweights in there. I am going to have to pull everything out and redo it. I think i packed too much heavy food, 38 pounds isn't going to work, i haven't even accounted for my water. I second that WTF, who the hell carries a 63 or let alone an 80 pound pack. Two years ago, i loaded up my first pack to go backpacking threw it on my shoulders and said," Oh, hell no" I knew there was no way that was going to be fun. I quickly got on the internet and began to study lightweight. I manged to drop my pack to less then 20 pounds( not counting food) and bought some lightweigby Roadrash - General Discussion

Sorry, the "empty trails" were kind of an inside joke to myself. I have three kids age 1 month, 3 years, and 4 years. I don't get away alot alone. Anything without my kids to me is empty (no fussing, crying, etc) Normally the trails I backpack are some trails in the Bay Area about ten miles from my house in the Sunol Wilderness. Hence the Empty trails. I can backpack those sometimes anby Roadrash - General Discussion

Okay, so that helps. The valley might be too much for them in three days. Is there water the whole way lyell-vogelsang, rafferty route. I think that sounds more dooable with them. How nice is Lyell Canyon, could you spend three days exploring them and going the whole eight miles back. I normally don't ask for trail suggestions on here but i need some expert advice. I normally backpack alone, but i am leaving this friday for a trip with a friend and his 13 year old son. We have three days maybe a 4th to backpack. I was planning on starting us out at Lyell canyon and make it an easy first day. From there what would you suggest. Is there a nice way back to the valley from there,by Roadrash - General Discussion
I would have to agree, everything in life is a hazard. I ride a motorcycle and at any point i could get in a collision and be killed, should we ban motorcycles. I work for the goverment and i see all of the rights we are losing. We don't need rangers all over the backcountry with a new law book. This was posted on Hikehalfdome.com, the blog portion. The injuries sustained were pretty good, she is lucky to be alive. I am the ex-EMT referred to in prev. post. Yeah, i watched the weather report on multiple websites and they all said one pm. I only made it because i left so early and was paranoid. You made great time though you were about one hour quicker then me getting there. Good job on that i walk fast and could not of gotten there any faster. The book did pay off. I did the hike today, and was able to pretty much know where i was going, where to find water, and was well prepared. This should be req. reading for anyone hitting the trail. I left at 430 to avoid the impending thunderstorm, which was on the horizon. I was able to make it at the cables by 10am, hike up, and then down by 1030 when the thunder started.
