Some minority visitors to Yosemite are asking for diverse stories about Yosemite's history. This L.A. writer wants YNP to add more history of minorities in Yosemite. Yosemite seeks a more diverse base hmmm, we Paiutes could help bring in many different groups with our historical accounts, if the Park would listen. Good question. Probably in Mariposa, but I will tell you this, that statement by ex-Chairman Leonard is untrue. This was well known amongst the members and when the topic of a casino was put on the table back in 2004 the Southern Sierra Miwuks had the largest membership attendance at their meetings....notby Yosemite_Indian - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Hi Riverkat Shoshone and Paiute are related. We are "cousins" and come from the same language grouping. You will usually find Paiute and Shoshones in close proximity on tribal maps. We can actually understand some of each others language. The majority of basket makers in Yosemite were Paiutes, than Yokuts and Washoes. Paiutes were the only ones who wore basket hats in the area. Paiutes are nomadic. Thank you for reading it. Yosemite NPS had an Indian ethnologist or specialist for over 30 years. His name is Craig D. Bates and he was married to Mewuk woman and hired Miwok workers like his mother-in-law in Yosemite Park. I think he should've gotten a warning first and then the tribe should go into an agreement with the government so that tribal members can pick cattails. In California tribes have agreements with state and federal government so they can gather plant materials to continue our traditions like basket making or traditional food gathering. That would solve the problem.by Yosemite_Indian - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thanks for reading it. Sometimes when you see photos of Indian in Yosemite you never know who they were, their story, and how they were related.
