Of course he shouldn't be charged unless he did something reckless. And hiking solo does not equal recklessness. It's a disturbing trend that local governments have started to use SAR operations as a chance for finger wagging and preaching about fault. A few bad apples abusing their SPOT devices hardly warrants abandoning the whole system. I think most hikers are thankful and grateful for tby bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Blewett Pass is a very apt name for this place.by bbb - General Discussion
Oh wow. I'll be in the area that day. It would mean one less day of hiking, though. Has anyone done this?? It looks vomit-inducing but also too absurd to pass up.by bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wow. I had a fortuitous meal at Pizza Factory too. I thought it might have been the fact that I had been hiking for three days. Shoe leather would have tasted good at that point. But I see that others liked it too. The place doesn't look like much from the road so I was pleasantly surprised.by bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks again for the correct distances. It looks like I am getting my trails mixed up. Is Forsyth the most direct route back to Tenaya from Half Dome? Do you know whether these trails are clearly signed? I am heading for Kings Canyon the next day and spending the night in the valley and/or taking the shuttle will push back my schedule pretty seriously.by bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks guys. It sounds like these routes are doable as day hikes. I might do Tenaya Lake to Cloud's Rest to Half Dome and then head back to Tenaya using the JMT. I think this is about 20 miles long too. This will help me avoid having to take a shuttle or spening a night in the valley.by bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
There are a couple trip reports around from people who have done all 22 miles of this in one day. Would this be impossible to do without running? I am not a trail runner but am in pretty-close-to-marathon shape, and I was thinking of trying this as a day hike in September. If weather conditions were not good, I would just do the normal route to Half Dome from Happy Isles. I guess I'm wonderinby bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The thing about the Angel's Landing chain is that it is not one continuous chain. It is also very tight against the rock in some areas, so it might be difficult to use a harness. I'm not completely sure, though. I was a little bit queasy when it came to the heights involved with Angel's Landing. The best advice I found was to keep the eyes on the ground ahead and to keep one hand on the cby bbb - General Discussion
Any type of t-shirt, long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt, and jacket have always worked fine for me. The space age fabrics that wick away moisture while massaging your muscles look very nice, but I can't help but think that a lot of the stuff is industry hype.by bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Good riddance. To paraphrase what someone else once said -- if you're going through a beautiful park trying to set a speed record, there's really no point in going. There are thousands of miles of pavement in the area where a race wouldn't involve shutting down the primary road into a national park. Why not use that instead?by bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for clearing this up. I was little bit confused about this before. The permit and camping rules are very convoluted, but they sort of make sense. I would never think about taking a space away from someone who genuinely needs it. The only goal is to try and nap for a while, preferably without having to arrive at the park before dawn on the day before a midnight hike. I am guessiby bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks everyone. I am going to look into the wilderness permit today. I am guessing that 'day before' means that I would have to get into Yosemite a full 24 hours before my evening snooze, so my plan will most likely be to try and get a parking/sleeping spot at Porcupine Creek, White Wolf, or Yosemite Creek. One site mentions the Tioga Overlook as a car sleeping area. I think it's between 395by bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I will be driving into Yosemite after a couple of days in Death Valley, using the Tioga Road entrance. This will be my first time attempting Half Dome, so I've decided to try and start at midnight or 1 am to beat the crowds and arrive on top for some more scenic early morning lighting. If I arrive on a Thursday afternoon, do you think there is any chance I could snag a spot at Porcupine Flaby bbb - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
