Yosemite Falls will have a trickle going down...Was there a week ago and it was pretty cool to hike down off the trail to the base of the Upper Falls...check out the cave and the smooth granite, and walk under the few drops coming down. And with the weekend storms you might be surprised at the amount of water. We also saw some guys setting up to highline above the Upper Falls....kinda wish we hadby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I only recall camp spots on the southeast and southwest sides of the lake, but check it all out...its not a big lake. And there might be somebody else there.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Simply from an elevation gain standpoint I would go to Cathedral Lake first. Up over Cathedral Pass at 9700 and circle past Echo Lake and over to Matthes. If you go up past Budd and over to Matthes between Echo Peaks and the Cockscomb you have to climb about 1000 feet higher. Save that for the second day when your pack is lighter.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
There is a good story about the group here. I met one of the hikers, Muku Reynolds, while hiking Mt Baldy a couple of years ago...she was a friend of my hiking buddy Mike. I remember her as a very experienced hiker as well as a fun person, after spending just a few minutes chatting on the trail. Somebody that I would have liked to get to know better. Very sad, and a reminder that even the mostby Bearproof - General Discussion
Yeah...good trip. May be my last with Chick-on, however...as I am fearing payback for pranks played on him A few more pics: Had lunch at Spiller Lake Bigfoot sighting on the ridge south of Finger Peaks Two ships passing in the (not) night on Doe Lake A nice evening for boating Any boulder climb that was average height or less was no problem for JKW Looking up Spilby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I don't know about Rafferty, but as of last Thursday Budd Creek was not "running", but you could still get drinkable water out of the pools at places in it. The little creek flowing out of the north side of Cathedral peak was running.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Well, I haven't done that exact route, but did a similar route from Echo to Cathedral, just went to the east of the Echo Peaks with my kids, probably ages 8 and 11 at the time. Pretty cool view of the Matthes Crest from just east of the Echo Peaks. Highly recommended. Your route should also be very doable. Quotechick-on Peeps ask me what interesting stuff has happened to me out there... well... since m prepared... sorry... it's very boring... Nothing interesting...hmmmm. Bring the smaller one. There are plenty of non-granite areas there. And even if you find the perfect camp site on a granite slab, you can anchor the guy wires with some rocks. And if the weather is nice, you can always sleep out under the stars!by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Extend to 4 nights...sure. Not sure of you want the same route with less miles per day, or a similar route with same miles per day and just more days. I will assume the former, after all, this should be a fun trip and the first of many, right? Day 1, TM to Vogelsang Lake (8 miles +/-) area (could be Vogelsang Lake, Boothe, Fletcher, or Bernice) Day 2 take Lewis Creek Trail down to Merced Lakeby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Both are good, but I vote for Vogelsang as well. The North Rim can be done at other times of the season when the higher country is locked up in snow. Its a good early season trip, going in from the Big Oak Flat Road/Foresta turnoff and coming out Snow Creek. And there is more water to be found on it early season than you will find now.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hmmm...several thoughts... If you are trail runners, wear your sturdy trail running shoes. Keep your feet happy. You don't need anything sturdier for the Yosemite trails imo unless you have ankle problems. Crane Flat Campground...centrally located, you can get to lots of places, but otherwise...meh. If it works in your plans, try to camp at Tuolumne. Tenaya Lake, over Clouds Rest and Half Domeby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I noticed a whole bunch of cameras filming last January in the El Cap meadow area...this must have been what they were shooting. Oh, what...it was Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson? Never mind.by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Not rash at all. I am sure that I will be there one or more times in October. Of course, you never know with the weather...the weather in the high country could be perfect and it could be perfectly horrible. But there is always something to do, even if the weather keeps you out of the high country. Keep in mind that no overnight parking is allowed on the Tioga Road after October 15, so if youby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yep, that's the saddle to cross over. As far as details...I can't help you. Like most uphill cross country routes, you will probably go a little left, then right, then right some more, then back to the left, etc. etc. There are probably many "correct" ways to get up there.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We did the Ledge a year ago, TR here....my buddy had thought he had found the start of the trail on a previous trip at the back of Curry Village...in fact out the back door of the remains of the old Curry Cabin, so we started up thataway. Turns our "trail" led up to somebody's little cowboy camp under a rock. He or she wasn't living there at the time but it looked like the location madeby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Well, this was pretty much that loop about 6 weeks ago. Plenty of water then, I think that you will be OK water wise. Trip report here. You are smart to do it in a "week or so"...we did it much too fast. Here is another TR that might give you some ideasby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
East...west...you're getting picky now? Yes, I meant west . Good catch! Other advice...so a buddy and I took our middle and high school aged boys on this trip (to Matthes from Tuolumne, that is) about 10 or so years ago, with the idea that we would give them the maps and let them do the route finding to Matthes. Turns out they started up the ridge way too early, which I think is what mostby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I agree with Mr. Wright...24 miles including Half Dome. No Half Dome...remove about 4 miles, so its 20, maybe a little less if you take the Mist Trail down from Nevada Falls, rather than the JMT. A very good alternative would be to start at the old quarry, head down to the top of Mt Watkins and then over to the Snow Creek Trail. If you have had enough head down Snow Creek, if you want amore yoby Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I love that loop! Thanks for sharing. Funny story...I was swimming at the outlet of Iceberg one time and relaxing on a warm slab in the buff to dry off. Just after I got dressed, a female ranger walked up and asked to see my wilderness permit, one of the few times I have actually been asked by a ranger for a permit. Hmm...I don't know, but I would plan to carry water, and I would check out Bridalveil Falls maybe when you drive in and/or Bridalveil Creek where it crosses the Glacier Point Road. If you are satisfied with the flow at those places then you could ditch some of the water you had planned to carry.by Bearproof - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
