QuoteBruins Rule I had dreams of going up to Duck Lake, though I presume that would be quite a trek for the kids.. How old? If at least 7, they can do it. Tough part is getting out of the boredom and work of the no-view trail starting at Coldwater. Once up some, the views should help lift one higher. all this talk about liters of water, camelbacks, stopping to filter and wasting time.....if time is of the essence, then .... just finish off your current single bottle, and without hardly missing a beat, just scoop up a new liter at a stream, pop in a Micropur tablet http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-MicroPur-Purification-Tablets-Choice/dp/B000R2ND6O and let it work for an hour. Please keep in perspective how many 10,000s of people died from the earthquake and tsunami, versus the far, far, far smaller number from radioactivity, whether acute poisoning in nuclear workers, or delayed effects. And also remember that aside from known and treatable radiation-induced thyroid cancer, most of those delayed risks are based on statistical assumptions, and that the risks in tby h_lankford - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. driving from east? on the way in or out go to the eastern entrance of Yosemite and drive south through the Owens Valley on rte 395 for the gorgeous views of the massive wall of the Sierras . The Owens Valley is the "Deepest Valley" , well -named. You could tie this in with a trip to /from Lone Pine to Death Valley/ Las Vegas. Bee, I'll be the first to ask - just nagging for the heck of it. Will this affect travel plans? When will Tioga open? How about High Sierra Camps? Are we there yet? The snow total still is not as much as 2005 and 2006, and spring thaw rate may be different as well. I think they were 180% years, and this one is 120% or so, I think - not sure that included this recent big dump. 200by h_lankford - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I've done all four routes through there. From Reds going north you can chose PCT to High Trail to JMT, PCT to River Trail to JMT, JMT all the way , or Shadow of the Minarets Trail (through Minaret-Cecile--Iceberg- Ediza-Shadow to JMT) The only time we did a one day was southbound Tuolumne via JMT to TI, then over to High Trail/PCT. All this talk about food reminds me of this quote: Most expeditions have some story about their food and attitudes to it vary from the haute cuisine of some French expeditions to the blunt assertion of Tilman, the famous eccentric and explorer, that he did not mind as long as there was some. sorry, my English was confusing. I did mean starting the day before, backpacking from Murphy to Tuolumne for the night. It was an idea suggested to me by the ranger. Also, I should have checked the current trailhead quota list. I was repeating what the ranger told me in 2006. He really did make a distinction between the two destinations, Lyell versus JMT South. I have done this hike 5 times as many other hikes and climbs in the area. Personally, I think the anticipation and views are better going southbound: Tuolumne to Mammoth. Agnew Meadows is on the Postpile Shuttle bus route, or as mentioned you can leave a car there before 7am, after 7pm. here are other options- I have used them all. you can ask for either JMT southbound, or Lyell Canyon. Different quotas despite same start point. That frees up more spots. also, you could ask for a start the day before at, say, Murphy Creek/Tenaya and camp at Tuolumne ,then head south from there the day you want. or, if well acclimatized, you could go ultra light and do the whole 30 mby h_lankford - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. My first post here. High Altitude Illnesses by definition do occur above an arguable altitude of 8,000 feet but there is no such thing as a finite line that one crosses. There is a continuum of altitude effects that begin even lower. For example, night color vision begins to deteriorate at 5,000 feet. Airplanes keep cabins pressurized to 8,000 feet equivalent because that is where altitude eby h_lankford - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
