I'm glad you enjoyed looking through it. It was a great trip! It was my second together with my nephews. The first was in 2010 and was about 10 days and it was fantastic as well. I posted the itinerary on here back then, but never got around to putting any pics with it. I may do that sometime. For me it is helpful to see what some of these places actually look like when planning a trip soby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I've traveled by Amtrak into the park form Sacramento a couple times. Each time involved an Amtrak Bus, Amtrak train, and the YARTS bus. There was never any discussion about baggage. I was traveling only with a backpack. On one occasion I checked the pack and on another I did not. When you check it, they store underneath bus and train. Quotechick-on You should do this: Up Merced all the way to park boundary. (Post Peak) Come back via High Trail past Bernice and over Vogelsang Pass. Restock at TM down GCT and up to White Wolf Bus back to valley from White Wolf 75 Miles (you were open to all suggestions, right?) I try to share all such 'educational" experiences (i.e. mistakes others made and paid dearly for) with the young males in my life (my nephews). The problem I am always troubled over is: Because all these young males by definition believe they are fairly invincible, and that all those who were involved in such incidents are by definition weak and stupid and "not like me", does itby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. This is an oddly fascinating book. It's easy to skip around and read about whatever you want the way it is written. I do not have any fixation on death, or death in Yosemite, but the book is very engaging, partly, I think, because of the way it focuses attention on the errors that are made. A person who reads this book, will have a lot of "lessons" in their head that can only be helpby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I guess there must be a lot of folks whose mind and body often wanders to Yosemite and craves to actually be there -- to see the sights, breathe the air, feel the freedom, hear the sounds (particularly of running water from the river that is often within earshot), and smell the strong scent of pine, and to just feel that feeling that exists there and not really anywhere else. I wonder if this qualifies as a form of "brocken spectre"? Here, it seems clear that the show is projected onto "fog/ mist/haze". It is of a mountain and not a person, but still it seems to be the same idea.by Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Someone has mentioned in this thread the possibility of hiking north to Tioga road instead of descending the Snow Creek Trail back into the Valley. I did just that this summer. After leaving NOrth dome, and taking the side trip to Indian Rock, we followed the trail to the footbridge across Snow Creek, but instead of crossing it at that point continued on and camped at an awesome site directlyby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I have used amtrak / YARTS twice to get into and out of Yosemite Valley. I think it is an awesome way to get to the park. I fly into Sacramento, stay in a motel that is a block from the amtrak station, walk theire the next morning and typically board a bus to Stockton followed by a train to Merced. There the Yarts bus will pick you up and carry you straight into Yosemite Valley. If you wish yby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

These are GREAT pictures of the slide. In the one in which someone is on the rocks, is this in the bottom of the canyon or did you wander "up" the slide some. It seems like you are at an elevation. If in the bottom of the canyon on the rocks, how high up is the pile of rocks above the surrounding canyon floor? Thanks for the annotation! That helps. Well, we did not hike down to the slide in slide canyon. We camped at a place that may be the spot you recommended between Mule and Burro pass. I'm not sure if it was technically in Slide Canyon or not. We had crossed the first pass and headed down, largely through very wooded areas. We did a pretty extensive backpacking trip in Yosemite 2 summers ago over the course of ~ 11 days, but I think the one we did this summer was more difficult ( and a couple days longer). If we lived closer it would be easier to get to Yosemite more frequently, but with me in Cleveland and my nephews in Nashville, it requires a lot of planning, time, etc. I always feel the draw of Yosemite and wiby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I believe I found it. This is the pic with Benson on the far right and just a bit of airplane wing on upper left. It's a different angle, but I'm pretty sure I've identified it. I think it's fun to look at these as I see something new each time. I was just noticing the meadows at the north end of Cold Canyon (we camped in one of these). WEll, I was definitely intrigued by Loch Tablae, but I just couldn't find anyone who had even something small to say about that general area. Thanks! Now I can see it clearly. We did not make it up Volunteer. That day was a long one and a tiring one. We left that morning from the northern end of Kerrick Canyon and slept at Rodgers Lake, with a stop and a swim at Benson. We started the day kind of late, and after a couple hours at Benson, did not make it to Rodgers until well after dark. So, it was an adventure. The next dayby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Although I did not make it to the top of Mt. Hoffman this year when there (for a variety of stupid reasons), I did begin the trek up. You're right. When I realized what I was looking at it was thrilling. In fact I was torn between wanting to just look, and wanting to try to take pics so I could look more later. I was lucky that it was clear, that the flight path took me over the park, and that I looked out at the right time and realized where I was.
