I know, I've been looking at the map since the last trip to REI (on a sidenote, why does every trip there cost me a ton of money?). One of my backpacking buddies moved down to SoCal, so the middle ground meeting point is Sequoia/KC.... Can we all agree to ban the word "turlock" from this illustrious forum?by oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
David, I agree with you on the 4x4 roads in the backcountry, if I had a dollar for every time we looked at the map and said "well thats not on the map..." I don't pretend to govern other people, but when I got into the backcountry, I carry the gps and my buddy will have the 8.5 topo map. Also, for those who are tech savvy, the iphone app Topo Maps is awesome. Although, I woulby oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quotemrcondron Access to Kibbie and Eleanor will start at the dam as the road across the dam closes in mid September to hold the hunters at bay. That's a negative. The gate is open until Dec 15 now.by oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
For thanksgiving, the Kibbie Lake Trailhead, Eleanor Trailhead and Hetchy Trailhead should all be open and plenty of terrain is accessable from there. If I recall correctly, I believe Chick-on spent either Thanksgiving or Christmas at Lake Vernon 2 years ago, so its definitely doable.by oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for sharing the pics, 10 Lakes is a very beautiful place. I thought that spring before the bend at Half Moon Meadow was year round, but I wasn't completely sure. Thanks for verifying it.by oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I disagree as well. I'm a big fan of campfires, the main reason being that I do a lot of cooking by campfires and they keep me warm when its cold. As for Plawrence's point of the time, its rare that it takes me more than 15 minutes to have enough wood for the night and to get a fire going, especially if you are in a group that works together. Those pics of Mahan are nice, I'm going to have to add it to the list to see. Mosquitos are always a nightmare at Vernon this time of year... Sounds like you had a great trip.by oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I usually carry more water than anything else on a dayhike. A sandwich, clif bar and a small bag of peanuts or cashews would be the most I'd carry. EDIT: As you can see, every answer you're getting is different, so you're going to have to figure out what works for you. Quotechick-oni just "aquired" Has acquired ever been used in a positive way? In my experience, which granted is quite limited, its usually used by thieves who say: "i acquired it" "oh ya, how so?" "well it fell of the back of a truck..." Its really on par with someone saying: "whats new?" "well I acquired herpes" Anywaysby oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I had some friends who were at Hyatt Lake this weekend and they had a simliar report: sustained 20-30 mph winds the whole trip, which made it a lot cooler at night then they expected. As for the sleeping bag, I go the 30 degree route (marmot arroyo) from very late May til mid September, however I've ran into some cold weather in September at 9k+, so as much as I hate the extra weight, I'll carby oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteeeek You can probably find something Yosemite Creek, Generally I would never be caught dead in a campground/campsite in the Park as I am a backpacker and love my solitude, however if I was to stay in a campground it would definitely be the Yosemite Creek Campground. The sites seem to be bigger than what I have seen in the Valley and you are mere miles away from a ton of great dayhikes oby oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Wherever, thanks for taking the time to make this thread! I was just wondering about the white wolf route to el cap. I did the yosemite creek campground trail down to the valley last weekend and it was nice, but I always prefer to go more cross country when possible. Blue Moon, Perhaps there should be a seperate section then. Honestly, I find that people are so passionate about this puzzling and I disagree with the questionable ethics line. I see nothing ethically wrong with paying more than face value for something that someone wants. Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Quotechick-on I think your logic is a bit flawed. What is too much? Take that number and use that number instead. Park charges 1/2 of that. Clown charges double and screws the system. It's not right. As for you other pts. I agree 110%. I've hinted at the later a few times... Too much is what is what someone isn't willing to pay. I guess I'm in the minority too, in that I could care less about scalping sites. As in the rest of life, something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. And the example used, $170 a night, that really isn't too expensive and seems a fair price to stay in the grandeur that is Yosemite.
