Eastern Sierra Guide Map. A standard AAA thing, still in print. Free for members. It's pretty good for its detail of approach roads and stuff. I'm headed out that way this week myself. I have the road service, if I have a chance I'll drop by the office to pick one up. Or put in a order via mail when I get back. Or scan it. Happy to share. Thanks for all the additional info. Nice to hear someone else has heard of these caves! Looking at my GPS track to Tuolumne Peak, my path went practically due north from May Lake, just a hint to the east to stay on that side of the ridge. The historical map (and all others that I've seen) indicate the trail swings much further to the east . Perhaps the trails do meet up, I probably wasn't lby QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks for that link, great shots. That part of the park is real close to the roads but few folks get over there. Could be real fun to tool around in with all of this season's snow.by QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The trail I followed seemed more like a spur trail. I got the feeling perhaps there once was some kind of structure or camp up there. I looked on old maps and couldn't find anything. It didn't really seem to lead to McGee. One area that intrigues me is North/Northwest of Mt. Hoffmann. Quite rugged back there. The old trail from May Lake towards Tuolumne Peak is real fun and has great views; they put a lot of work into it back in the day. To find the connection: If you are hiking on the trail heading north from May Lake, you pass the lake, head through a level area and the main trail takes a turn to the right, contouring a ridge, your first nice wide open view. Right before that turn, there's a staby QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I love everything in the area between Tenaya & Elizabeth Lakes, there are lots of cool loops if you are up for some class 2 - easy 3. Fun approaches include: - Heading over/around the ridge and up the back of Tenaya Peak - Fisherman's trail to Lower Cathedral Lake - Climber's trail to the back of Fairview Dome - Budd Creek - standard Cathedral & Elizabeth Lakes trails are kinda boby QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'd agree with the above, but you might want to check to make sure parking is available at the TH. I haven't driven the Tioga Road since it's opened, but from what I gather, some of the parking areas have yet to be plowed.by QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I wandered to the top of El Cap last weekend, June 11-13, first time I'd been up there. It was awesome. Walking upstream is the general rule and will serve you well for the most part, but in some areas a little more creativity may be involved. Bear in mind that most trails were designed for mules and not the conditions we're experiencing now. For example: Eagle Creek Meadows is currently a series of lakes with tributaries and outlets all around. The trail plows right through the mess, if you hby QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I hiked up Yosemite Falls to El Cap last weekend. There's still a lot of snow on the shady side of the rim, but it's pretty well consolidated now. Every so often I'd punch through but it wasn't too bad. Water was more of an issue, every little drainage was a raging torrent. Some major course-correction was in order to avoid all the unmapped rivers running through the snow. Certain sections oby QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We ran into a ranger who was removing one of the snow survey markers in the Lake Vernon area a few years ago. She said the surveys are all done via modern methods now, remote sensors, electronically. The pole removal was in accordance with NPS wilderness policy; over the years they've been active in hauling all sorts of man-made junk out of there. I was camping about 100 yards south of the summit of El Cap yesterday morning. Heard a distant helicopter and in a moment they were landing right on top of me. Fortunately I was out of the rotor wash, the fellow in charge came down to warn me. They landed two loads of YOSAR crew, about a dozen total, then dropped a load of gear at the top of the route. Here's a question I remember each time I visit YNP, then I come home and can't find a definitive answer. Maybe the best place to ask is here. Driving through the Valley, I'm sure you notice the sign posts along the road. Often at trailheads: V1, V2, etc. On the Tioga Road, I seem to recall they are marked T1, T2, and there's at least one more letter prefixing the signs to the south. Yes, I understand that, and I'm not going to waste my time posting the info on Craigslist again. I only needed it as proof-of-concept for the sticky PSA that I'm suggesting Craigslist should run.
